What are invertebrates
Invertebrates are animals without a backbone. Most of them possess an exoskeleton which covers up
almost their entire body. Invertebrates live both inland and in the sea. Some invertebrates also live in
both habitats. Though, the majority of invertebrates live inland. There are 3 different types of
invertebrates, molluscs (plural of Mollusca), annelids (plural of annelida) and arthropods (plural of
arthropoda). Invertebrates are an important part of the human nature, as we have already mentioned,
most species of the world are invertebrates. As a result they contribute to pollinate plants and are a big
part of the food chain. Without them many plants would die due to lack of pollination and would result
in the collapse of the food chain.
Classes of invertebrates.
For this part of the presentation, we will be talking about the types of invertebrates, mainly mollusks,
annelids and arthropods.
Molluscs are cold-blooded invertebrates meaning they live in warm, fresh bodies of water. Octopuses,
snails and scallops are types of molluscs. Many species of mollusks contain a hard outer shell to cover
their soft body. Most molluscs have tentacles for feeding and sensing, and many have muscular foot. This
may come to a surprise but not all mollusks possess a true brain.
Annelids, also known as segmented worms are a type of invertebrate which lives in various ecologies
(basically in both land and sea). Annelids are mostly composed of multiple segments, each segment
having the same set of organs. Annelids don’t have legs so the have tiny bristles called chaetae to help
them move. Annelids are hard to kill as when their segments are separated, they can function as
individual pieces. They also regenerate lost body parts quickly. Annelids are commonly used as bait for
fishing and has been linked to improving soil fertility.
Arthropods are invertebrates which have an exoskeleton that covers their body, which is, like annelids,
divided into multiple segments. Unlike annelids though, each segment cannot regenerate when
separated. Insects, arachnids, crustaceans and myriapods are types of arthropods. Arthropods are the
most common type of invertebrates as well as the most common type of animals in the world! They are
important members of the marine, land and even air ecosystems.
