Functions
1 The function 𝑓 is defined by 𝑓: → 𝑥 2 − 4𝑥, 𝑥 ∈ 𝐼𝑅, |𝑥| ≤ 1

Show by means of a graphical argument or otherwise, that 𝑓 is one-one, and find an

expression for 𝑓 −1 (𝑥). [5]

2 It is given that 𝑓(𝑥) ≡ (𝑥−∝)(𝑥 + 𝛽), 𝑥 ∈ 𝐼𝑅, where ∝ and 𝛽 are positive constants.
Sketch on separate diagrams the curves with the following equations, giving in each
case the coordinates of the points at which the curve meets the 𝑥-axis.

(i) 𝑦 = 𝑓(𝑥), (ii) 𝑦 = |𝑓(𝑥)|. [2/2]

3 (a) The functions 𝑓, 𝑔 and ℎ are defined by

𝑥 3
𝑓: 𝑥 → 2𝑥−3, 𝑥 ∈ 𝐼𝑅, 𝑥 ≠ 2;

1
𝑔: 𝑥 → 𝑥+1 , 𝑥 ∈ 𝐼𝑅, 𝑥 ≠ −1;

ℎ: 𝑥 → 3𝑥 + 1, 𝑥 ∈ 𝐼𝑅.

Find (i) ℎ𝑔(𝑥), [1]

(ii) 𝑓 −1 (𝑥). [2]

The function 𝑓 is defined by

𝑓: 𝑥 → |5 − 𝑥| for −1 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 7

(i) Sketch the graph of 𝑦 = 𝑓(𝑥). [2]

(ii) State the range of 𝑓. [1]

4 Sketch, on the same axes, the graphs of 𝑦 = |2𝑥 − 3| and 𝑦 = 𝑥 + 1. Hence solve the
inequality |2𝑥 − 3| < 𝑥 + 1. [4]

5 (i) Sketch on the same diagram the graphs of 𝑦 = |3𝑥 + 4| and 𝑦 = |2𝑥 + 1|.

(ii) Hence or otherwise, solve the inequality |3𝑥 + 4| < |2𝑥 + 1|. [5]

6 Solve the inequality |3−3𝑥 − 54| < 27 [4]

7 Functions 𝑓 and ℎ are defined as 𝑓(𝑥) = 3𝑥 − 1, 𝑥 ∈ 𝐼𝑅,

ℎ(𝑥) = 2𝑥 + 5, 𝑥 ∈ 𝐼𝑅.

Find the value of 𝑥 for which 𝑓ℎ(𝑥) = 2ℎ𝑓(𝑥). [4]

𝑓: 𝑥 → (𝑥 − 2)(𝑥 + 3), 𝑥 ∈ 𝐼𝑅 𝑥 ≥ − 2.

𝑓: 𝑥 → 4𝑥 2 + 1 𝑥 ∈ 𝐼𝑅

Find (i) the exact values of 𝑥 for which 𝑓ℎ(𝑥) = 0,

(i) the inverse of 𝑓(𝑥) and state its domain. [6]

9 Functions 𝑓 and 𝑔 are defined by 𝑓: 𝑥 → 𝑥(2 − 𝑥)(𝑥 + 3), and 𝑔: 𝑥 → 𝑥 2 (2 − 𝑥),

(c) 𝑦 = 𝑔(𝑥) (d) 𝑦 = |𝑔(𝑥)| [4]

10 Find the domain and range of the following functions

1
(a) 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 (b) 𝑓(𝑥) = √𝑥 + 3 (c) 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 − 4 (d) 𝑓(𝑥) = |𝑥|

1
(e) 𝑓(𝑥) = ln 𝑥 (f) 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑒 𝑥 (b) 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥−2

11 Given a function 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 3 . On the same axes Sketch the graph of 𝑓(𝑥) and 𝑓 −1 (𝑥).

12 Given that 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 + 3. Using graphical argument solve the inequality |𝑓(𝑥)| > 1.
