Well, look at this arithmetic in a place where a lot of folks just dont like to change horses no matter how lame. Nobody ever lost money betting on the Tories ... but that could change
upside the head, questions over why the government had to pick the .05 drinking and driving law and talk about taxes as vote-getting winners going into the ballot battle. Monday, after a weekend Redford would no doubt like to forget, the premier is still under fire for an MLA committee that hasnt met since 2008 while the politicians who belong to the bogus group, the vast majority being Tory, shut up and score $1,000 each and every month for doing zip. Last Friday, with Redford back from a trip stateside, the premier says the do-nothing committee is ridiculous. Two days later she says MLAs on this insult of a committee should give the money back for their lucrative time in nothingness but adds its a personal decision. By Monday, the premier says shes heard from Albertans and believes were right and Tory members of the legislature wont accept any money for sitting on any committees while they await a report on MLA pay and perks expected in ... just wait for it ... a couple or three weeks. And there wont be any committees sitting in less than two weeks. When the election is over, MLAs will almost certainly be paid a much bigger salary and no separate coin for committee work. What a sacrifice! As for the politicians paying back unearned cash pocketed while part of the ghost group, Liberal leader Raj Sherman and Wildrose MLAs Heather Forsyth and Guy Boutilier commit to return their do-nothing dough. Sadly but predictably, even after some speaking of truth to power, most of those on the do-nothing detail do nothing once again and just hope the aggravation blows over. Dont forget no one does a thing but cash cheques until after the Canadian Taxpayers Federation shines a light on this scandal. Meanwhile, the mess over Gary Mar gives opposition parties the chance to dust off the case of Kelley Charlebois, now the interim executive director of the Tory party. Old Tories never die they just get another job. Back in the day, Charlebois scooped up in the neighbourhood of $400,000 in untendered contracts for work in his pal Mars old department with no record of work done. Will the premier admit she knew about Mr. Mars previous ethical violations when she appointed him as Albertas trade commissioner to Hong Kong without a competition and, if so, why did she do that? asks NDP leader Brian (Wide Mouth) Mason, a pitch-perfect specialist in getting under Tory skin. Right now we have no idea

when the ethics commissioner will wrap up the looksee on Mars questionable auction item to the Orient. We do want to move ahead as quickly as possible, says Neil Wilkinson, the ethics commish. Mar says hes not guilty. Five points between the top two parties. Still, theres six weeks and a long way to go. Redford enjoys great support among women. In Edmonton the Tories are No. 1 and Wildrose are third. Most Albertans feel the economy is good and throughout the province more voters trust the Tories to manage the oilsands and by a double-digit margin. Percentages dont translate into seats, since it depends on how the votes split between the parties. And there is still the brand. Deep thinkers have lost their shirts betting the Tories will do worse than they do. Yes, this snapshot in time doesnt tell us if Albertans will change horses. But the math of the moment says it looks like a horse race.
