CODING-DECODING
What does this hand
gesture mean?
Have you seen someone showing this
gesture?
What you make of it?
So…What is a code?
A code is something we use when we want to say something in a faster or secret way.
It’s time for
marking
Attendance!
Example 1: Code
Hand movements

Instead of talking, we often use various hand movements

to pass on a message. Each of these hand movements is
a
code for something.

Eg:
We clap our hands when we want to praise someone.
We do not say anything- but we use the code to pass on
the message.

Have you ever noticed how traffic policemen control the

traffic flow using their hands!
What did you do?

You decoded!
Decode is how we understand the information given in a secret or different form.
Example 2: Decode

Here are some common emojis. Can

you decode (find what they mean)
them?
Code: Example 3

Your password on a computer (or

phone) is a secret code between you &
the computer.
When you type the code-no one else
understands-but the computer does!
So, it follows the code that you
inserted and gets the task done.
Why do we use coding?

A code is most helpful when you want to pass on a message secretly.

When you want to shorten the message.

When you can’t communicate

verbally.
Symbol Coding
Here is a secret code sheet.
In this code,

A= balloon symbol
B= square symbol
C= butterfly symbol etc..

Using this code, if you want to

write CUT, which symbols will you
choose?
Symbol Coding

Using the secret code, write

down your favourite colour.

Match your answers with your

classmate to see if you like the
same colour.
Number Code

Here is a different type of code. It’s

called the Letter Code.
In this code, all the letters of the
alphabet are given a
number. A= 1
B= 2
C= 3…and so
on..
Number Code
In this code, all the letters of
the alphabet are given a
number.

A= 1
B= 2
C= 3…and so on.

Using this code, you can write

words with numbers instead of
letters.

So, instead of writing DOG-you

can write 4-15-7
Mime me 2 min

Fun ○ Ride a bike

○ Read a book
○ Act like your Mom

Sample Question-2

Square is coded as 4.
So, in the problem, we can replace square by 4.
4+ Triangle = 7
Now, we know 4+ 3 gives us 7.
So, the value of triangle = 3

The value of Triangle + Triangle:

3+ 3= 6
So, the answer to this question is 6.
