DURHAM, NH The race for Governor of New Hampshire is wide open as voters are unaware of the candidates seeking the
seat. New Hampshire Governor John Lynchs job approval rating continues to rise in his last year in office. Economic
problems continue to be the top concerns for Granite Staters, but have moderated somewhat in recent months.
These findings are based on the latest WMUR Granite State Poll, conducted by the University of New Hampshire Survey
Center. Five hundred thirty-eight (538) randomly selected New Hampshire adults were interviewed by landline and cellular
telephone between April 9 and April 20, 2012. The margin of sampling error for the survey is +/- 4.2 percent. Included is a
subsample of 486 likely general election voters (margin of sampling error +/- 4.4%).
Gubernatorial Approval
In his final year as New Hampshire governor, John Lynch continues to be extremely popular. In the most recent Granite State
Poll, 72% of New Hampshire adults say they approve of the way he is handling his job as governor, 17% disapprove, and 12%
are neutral or dont know. Lynch has strong support among Democrats (87% approve) and also receives majority support from
Independents (64%) and Republicans (59%).

Lynchs personal favorability ratings also remain very high. In the latest Granite State Poll, 74% of New Hampshire adults say
they have a favorable opinion of Lynch, 14% have an unfavorable opinion, 6% are neutral, and 6% say they dont know enough
about him to say. Lynchs net favorability rating, the percentage having a favorable opinion minus the percentage having an
unfavorable opinion, remains very high at +60%. Lynch receives very high net favorability ratings from Democrats (+83%) as
well as from Independents (+48%), and even receives high net favorability ratings from Republicans (+39%).

Hypothetical matchups between the Republican candidates Lamontagne and Smith and the declared Democratic candidates
Hassan and Cilley also show an unengaged electorate.
In a matchup between Lamontagne and Hassan, 34% of likely general election voters say they would vote for Hassan, 29%
prefer Lamontagne, 1% favor some other candidate, and 36% are undecided. Lamontagne held a narrow lead over Hassan in
February.

In a matchup between Hassan and Smith, 29% of likely voters say they will vote for Hassan, 24% for Smith 1% for some other
candidate and 46% are undecided.
When Cilley is matched with Lamontagne and Smith, the results are similar to those seen with Hassan. In a race between
Lamontagne and Cilley, 31% of likely general election voters say they would vote for Cilley, 30% prefer Lamontagne, 1% favor
some other candidate, and 38% are undecided.
And in a race between Smith and Cilley, 30% of likely general election voters say they would vote for Cilley, 23% prefer Smith,
1% favor some other candidate, and 47% are undecided.
