Even though everyone won't agree with what is written, it is what some people think & allows readers to air their views. Vintage: another vintage car extravaganza was seen in the streets of Canowindra on Tuesday with some of the Vintage Caravan crew coming over for the day to check out the Age of Fishes & Charlie's Holden museums. Cowra was the host of this year's Vintage Caravan Nationals which is held every two years. In 2010 it was held in Mildura with 65 caravans, this year they had 140, attracting Queensland participants as it was held in NSW for the first time in a number years. Although the open day was held last Sunday, the cars & vans will be in Cowra until 5 May. Some of our visitors today said they would like to return later in the week when more shops are open. Members: two weeks worth of applications have been received by the Canowindra Services Club, & they already have half the number of members registered just before the fire. Grant Cummings wishes to thank everyone who is supporting the Club by becoming members, & advises that anyone who joins prior to 8pm Friday night will be eligible for the member's draw from that night onwards. Badge Draws will recommence with the amount they were up to at the time of the fire. Bookings are now being taken for functions & meetings, but get in quick as this year's diary is filling fast. You are encouraged to visit the Mobile Office when they are in town to find out how you can obtain assistance with Centrelink, Medicare, Australian Hearing & Child Support payment & service options. Fitness: into Art? The River Bank Gallery are hosting a fundraising art exhibition in support of the Canowindra Fitness Path Project "Don't be a Witness, Get into Fitness". If you haven't finished your work yet, hop to it. Entries are due in at the Gallery by Wednesday afternoon (Thursday morning at the absolute latest!) & you will be helping a great community facility take shape. If you can't contribute a painting, turn up to the exhibition opening this Saturday night 5 May & gaze in wonder at all the talent that Canowindra produces. RED SHIELD APPEAL FOR VOLUNTEERS The local Salvation Army is calling for volunteer collectors to help with the national Red Shield Appeal doorknock. Canowindra's doorknock appeal will be held Saturday 26 May 2012, a week later than the national advertised date. The Salvation Army needs to reach a national doorknock goal of $10 million to maintain services in the year ahead. Canowindra has a doorknock goal of $3,000 for this year. The Red Shield Appeal is vital in enabling the Salvos to continue offering their frontline services. Helping some of societys most vulnerable people, particularly those with financial strain from housing affordability and the increased cost of living. High levels of stress, anxiety and depression, and more worrying, the prevalence of people exhibiting suicidal tendencies is increasing in needing assistance. The Salvation Army is uniquely positioned to be able to meet peoples needs on many fronts to help people find freedom from financial stress, emotional turmoil, loneliness, homelessness, addiction and so many other issues. More than ever, the Salvos need the support of the Australian community to help fund their social programs. To the editor...

I would like to thank the small group of volunteers who one again turned out to help with the working bee at the Canowindra Cemetery this weekend past. You all deserve a massive pat on the back for the huge improvement you made to the appearance of the grounds. I have already received messages of thanks from people who wish for their appreciation to be passed on. They are, to say the least, very happy with the outcome. Without our loyal group of helpers, many of who attended the first working bee last year, this would not be possible & I personally cannot say thank you enough. I would also like to say a special thank you to the Phoenix for continuing to support our cause by publishing notices. Your help is vital to getting the word out & also greatly appreciated. Well done to all involved. G FOR GEORGE AND YEOVAL SHOW The famous G for George Lancaster Bomber which is on display in the National War Memorial in Canberra is the feature of the travelling War Memorial Exhibit which will be featured at the forthcoming Yeoval Show on Tuesday 8 May. In the days of the Second World War there were hundreds of small one teacher schools throughout NSW, one of which was the Yullundry Public School, some 14kms from Yeoval, with James Alexander Saint-Smith as the teacher. In January 1941 aged 24 years James resigned his teaching position and joined the Australian Air Force. Piloting the "G" for George Lancaster Bomber for its first 13 successful raids was Flight Sergeant 403380 James Alexander Saint-Smith DFC DFM, of the RAAF 460 Squadron. As he had completed his second tour of duty he had been granted leave to return to Australia to marry. The day before his flight home, he undertook a mission in a Mosquito as a target spotter and was killed on 29 June 1944 aged 26 years. His fianc never married, as she had lost the one and only love of her life, and is in her nineties living in the Central West. The original Yullundry School building was transported to the Yeoval Central School site where it still houses daily classes today. On Friday 11 April 2008 a special service was held in the grounds of Yeoval Central School attended by a group of Airmen from RAAF base Richmond, representatives of the French Embassy and local Residents. In 2008 a plaque was affixed to the building in memory of its famous teacher, from another place in another time. The Yeoval Show is to be opened by a serving member of Flight Sergeant James Alexander Saint -Smiths Squadron...RAAF 460 Squadron.

PYTHONS NEWS Molong travelled to Canowindra for their first contest with the Pythons for a couple of years. Both teams were on the attack from the opening whistle but the first points were a penalty to Canowindra kicked by Tom Abbott. An intercept by Ben Enosa saw the Pythons score the first try of the game which was converted by Tom Abbott. From then on the Pythons attacked and Clint Oborn went over in the corner and the try was converted by Tom. Molong converted a penalty but were unable to score. The Pythons crossed again with Daniel Muldoon doing the honours this time but unfortunately it was not converted. The score at half time was 22-3. The second half was an arm wrestle between both teams until the ball got out to Daniel Muldoon who got away to score another good try. This one was converted by Tom Abbott who had a great all round game. The final score was 29-. Points: Daniel Bowd-3; Lachlan Noble-2; Daniel Williams & Daniel Muldoon-1. Players Player : Daniel Bowd Special mention and thanks must go to Jack Beath who put off getting medical attention on his broken thumb to make sure he came and ran the sideline for the Pythons. GOING PLACES... Rohan Toole, a Year 10 student at Canowindra High School, has been selected in the Australian Under 19 squash team to play in the WSF World Junior Squash Championships 2012 to be held in Doha, Qatar (in the Middle East) in July. This is the fruits of Rohan playing for two years in professional events, training camps and selection matches against other eligible players, all of them at least two years older than himself. These Men's & Womens World Junior Individual Championships will be held from 7 to 12 July at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash the bye and backed up the boys well. We have also been blessed to send our daughter to St Edwards and another to the preschool and family daycare, and all have been wonderful places of learning, fun and provided a caring, safe environment. Work is taking us elsewhere, but we will never forget what Canowindra and its people have done for us as a family. We will be back ... the cat is still here on holiday (!).... and we will always, always tell people of the wonderful experience we have had being part of the Canowindra community. OUR FUTURE NETBALL UMPIRE Another Canowindra High student is becoming a star in her chosen sport. Sarah Clunes is in Year 9 and will be travelling to Bathurst over the next few weeks to try out for the Western Region netball umpiring panel.
