What: The 17th annual Wine
at Town Center
This years Wine at Town Center will be from 6 to 9 on Saturday, June 2 in El Dorado Hills. More than 35 wineries, three breweries and 20 restaurants will participate in this years Rotary fundraiser event.
Madrona Vineyards and Mount Aukum Winery are just a few that will be pouring at Wine at Town Center. But, these wineries also have events of their own all summer long. Wine lovers are encouraged to try out their favorites at the June fundraiser and then wander up the hill to attend other activities at the local vineyards. This is our third year pouring for Wine at Town Center, said Laurie Dishman, Mount Aukum Winery director of sales and marketing. I love this event. Its a great opportunity to showcase our regions wineries and what we have to offer. The Mount Aukum Winery tasting room is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at no charge, seven days a week, located at 6781 Tower Road, Sommerset. We are on a mountain and its a great view, Dishman said. You can bring a picnic and have a great afternoon. The wine makers, Michel Prodhon and Bill Dishman, are usually around, so people can enjoy the wine while talking with the makers. The winerys unique taste features California grapes with a touch of French style. My uncle Michel has such an interesting story of learning to make wine in France. This is a family winery and we want everyone to come be a part of it. For more information, visit mountaukum.com. Madrona Vineyards will also be pouring at the June fundraiser. Most likely, we will pour the Chardonnay, Dry Riesling, Cabernet and Zinfandel, said Kathleen Leavitt, Madrona Vineyards event coordinator. There is also a possibility that we may pour the Nebbiolo Rose. This is a great wine for the summer as it pairs nicely with Carnitas, Paella or anything off the grill like sausage or shrimp. The Dry Riesling pairs nicely with spicy foods like Indian Curry, Thai food and even Sushi. Leavitt said Madrona participated last year and has done so several times since Wine at Town Cen-
ter began 17 years ago. For those who like what they taste, they can visit the Madrona tasting room from 11 a.m.-5 p.m., seven days a week, located at 2560 High Hill Road, Camino. During the summer, we are selling our wine by the glass and also offering gourmet snack plates, Leavitt said. We also have many picnic tables if people would like to bring their own lunch and enjoy the beautiful grounds and views. For more, visit madronavineyards.com. Matthew Ross, 8, of Roseville practices his swing at the Gorin Tennis Academy in Granite Bay.
ts true that most kids cant wait to hear schools out for summer. But without a wellthought-out plan, boredom can set in quickly. Lucky for Granite Bay kids, Gorin Tennis Academy has a cure for the summertime blues. With two different week-to-week camps to choose from, the competitive tennis kid and the newbie can both have fun and learn skills that will help them, both on and off the court. Future Stars Camp is an introduction to the sport, which incorporates elements of the USTAs QuickStart Program. The session is typi-
cally for kids age 5 to 10, though older kids who are newcomers to the sport will enjoy Future Stars, as well. Tournament Training Camp is a program that is designed to help kids improve their game or for the kid who is trying to improve his or her USTA sectional or national ranking. Summer camps are
five days a week, between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., said Stacey Joslin, who owns the academy with her husband, Vitaly Gorin. For those who pay close attention to the tennis world, Gorin is renowned world-wide for the quality competitors they produce and for boarding and training young people from all over the world. Ive had people say to me, You guys are the ones who have players training to go to Wimbledon, Joslin said. But thats only 1 percent of our players. We have little bitty kids starting out when they are as young as 4, and we have 13-year-olds who have never played before. Though Gorin is pas-
sionate about his sport, he is most excited to see kids master an activity that will give them pleasure and keep them fit for a lifetime. Sports in general give kids a higher level of discipline and focus, and sports also give kids a lot of socialization, Gorin said. But tennis is truly a sport of a lifetime. If you go to Palm Springs or Indian Wells, you will see 80year-olds playing tennis. Thats what I love about it if you learn it and enjoy it, you can play tennis for the rest of your life. What kid wouldnt love learning a new sport with new friends, followed by lunch prepared by a resident chef, and swim time to follow?

im Kirstein is 70 years old and has been an avid bike rider for more than 30 years. His ridden his bike at various locations in the United States and Canada and says the city of Folsom has among the best bike trails hes seen. There are very few places Ive found that have bicycle trails as good as what we have in Folsom, Kirstein said. Thats not to say theyre perfect, but Ive ridden in Portland ... and in Davis here in California, and I enjoy Folsoms trails better. Folsom has nearly 35 miles of Class I bike trails; the major corridors being the Humbug and Willow Creek trails, the Folsom Parkway Trail, the Oak Parkway Trail and the Lake Natoma Trail, which connects with the American River Trail. The city of Folsom has had a lot of support in helping to be sure that its known as a biking community. The Friends of the Folsom Parkway have played a significant role in developing most of the bike trails in the city. Also,
organizations such as the Folsom Area Bicycle Advocates have helped make the city more bike friendly and encouraged more people to ride bikes and be able to do so more safely within the city. Weve taken advantage of our geography and community resources and weve got this multi-functional trail system thats used for recreation and transportation and it connects neighborhoods together and our community together, said Robert Goss, the citys parks and recreation director. Our trails connect us to El Dorado County, Placer County, Sacramento County, the American River Parkway, California State Parks and the Bureau of Reclamation. The trails are integrated into our community. When we do surveys, the trail system is always in the top-three, if not the top recreation facility or community amenity that people like. Kirstein rides six days a week in and around Folsom, riding a minimum of 20 to 25 miles on a short ride to upwards of
100 miles when hes out for a long ride. From flat rides to rides with more hills, Kirstein loves it all; estimating he rides his bike 12 to 15 hours a week. Riding just helps with my physical and my mental health, Kirstein said. Mentally, it just allows me, as I ride, to think things out. ... Plus, you meet a lot of really nice people on the trail. Kirstein has led rides for bicycle clubs over the years, developing a route, advertising it and then leading up to 70 riders. Before he retired, Kirstein, who has lived in Folsom since 1978, commuted to work via the American River Bike Trail at least twice a week.
Jim Kirstein, a 70-year-old Folsom resident, said Folsoms bike trails are the best hes ridden. He spends between 12 and 15 hours each week riding his bike in and around Folsom.

CUTLINE: At the time of the photo, Trisha and Geoff Flynn were just a few weeks from opening their second restaurant in the Greater Sacramento area. They plan to open for business in June in the Palladio center in Folsom.
a new dining eatery in Folsom with the opening of Chops. Chops restaurant will open the first week in June at the Palladio shopping center. The owners, Geoff and Trisha Flynn, said they felt Palladio would be the best fit for their upscale restaurant. Based on the demographics, the center and just the buzz about it, said Trisha Flynn. The desire of people to want to get out, its just a very positive experience, so we chose to go forward. It will be a soft opening to start, with limited seating for a short time, Flynn said. The official grand opening will occur later this summer. Gloria Wright, Palladio at Broadstone general manager, worked with the Flynns, showing them the area, outlining the economics and all the variables. They both ended up falling in love with the center and the community, and are just so excited to be opening at the center, Wright said. Geoff Flynn, Trishas

husband, started the 4th Street Grill years ago in Sacramento, and sold it after about seven years. Between that sale and the beginning of Chops, Geoff worked on restaurant interiors. Kitchen packages, the booths, everything, Flynn said. My husbands very well-versed in interiors, and has a great feel for that kind of thing. He decided he wanted to get back into (the restaurant business), and thats how I got into it. The Chops restaurant at 11th and L Streets in Sacramento has been a popular stop, especially for businesses and legislators since it was opened nine years ago. It is wellknown for its USDA cornfed beef, as well as prime rib, seafood and lamb and pork chops. The Palladio location, though similar, will have a little different flow and
feel to it, Trisha said. If they want to have a Porterhouse they certainly may, Flynn said. But you also may bring your family out to dinner and do it reasonably where its more family friendly across the board. They can come, have a great time, sit out on our patio and send the kids to the movie. Flynn said both locations will keep the same feel, with only small color differences. A private dining room with a capacity of 45 will be available at the Folsom Chops. I care if people walk out feeling good about their experience here, Trisha said. Its not all about the money, its really about the longevity. Ultimately, that is what ensures our long term residence in Folsom. For more information, visit gopalladio.com.

The free, family oriented event will offer live entertainment, a dance area and picnic space in the piazza near the

While no alcohol is allowed in the piazza, Wright said there are a variety of restaurants located just steps away for people to enjoy after the show. She said because the event is scheduled during summer months, many children will be on school break. This will be a nice break for everyone to come and enjoy themselves for a few hours, she said. rom tender flute, to the clash and crash of symbols, The Folsom Symphony will bring music from movie favorites like Star Wars, and Raiders of the Lost Ark to Three Stages for a two-night show June 1-2. Both Star Wars Suite and Dances with Wolves won Oscars for Best Score, and other highlights of the evening, The Kings Speech, Platoon and Raiders of the Lost Ark, were nominated for Oscars for Best Picture. With the June 2 performance nearly sold out, Folsom Symphonys board members and Three Stages offered a second performance. As a performer, playing Raiders of the Lost Ark, you can just picture Harrison Ford with his fedora in hand. And the Star Wars Suites five movements from the motion picture is a signature piece a very popular piece that is very technical; very challenging to the symphony, said Anson Wong, a Folsom Symphony violinist, and board member. Everybody enjoys movie themes, and these are the original scores, so its really fun for the musicians to play. The Star Wars Suite is one of Wongs personal favorites, he said. I love science fiction, and I particularly like watching this movie because I remember standing in line for the motion picture when I was a kid, Wong said.
The Suite is probably the most challenging piece of the evening, and its particularly challenging for the violins. Its the nostalgia factor that will draw non-musical folks to Three Stages. We decided that doing a program that involved the movies would be a fun thing to do, said Folsom Symphony Maestro Michael Neumann. These are fun pieces its all very energetic or emotional music, and theres no question that because the music is so exciting, it will resonate with people who have enjoyed these movies. I dont think you can go wrong with music of this nature. This is a great opportunity for people who dont typically love classical music, as well. Wong said this performance will serve as a reminder of how music impassions people. The music just adds so much drama to the movies, Wong said. And movies show us how important classical music is in creating mood. The final performance of the symphonys eighth season, Symphony at the Movies, is the organizations traditional pops performance.

Season ticket renewals began on May 16, and new subscribers can purchase season tickets on May 29. Individual concerts will be sold beginning in July. The whole season is excellent and Im looking forward to opening night in October, Wong said. Personal favorites like Schuberts Unfinished Symphony and Tchaikovskys 1812 Overture are pieces that Wong looks forward to sharing with music lovers in the fall. Until then, audiences will fall in love, all over again, with Platoons Adagio for Strings, Pirates of the Caribbean, and a James Bond Medley. Artist Judy Arrigotti will show her work at the fifth annual Spring Art Studio Tour. This is a sample of her work, titled Valley View.
The fifth annual Spring Art Studio Tour will give visitors a chance to look in on the private work space of local artists including 36 artists in 14 studios. The tour is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., June 2 and 3. There will be demonstrations, displays, and a chance to converse in person with the artists, many of whom may be your neighbors. Artists and guests build a relationship and look forward to the annual opportunity to share their love of art, said event chairperson Judy Arrigotti, an artist in oil painting and gourd work. Her studio will be available to visit on the tour. Artists who have participated in previous years include Carol Quinn of Folsom, Philip Lachapelle of Camino and Tatyana Fogarty of Fair Oaks. They all are landscape artists, mainly in oils. Each works to evoke the feeling and essence of a place with a unique vision all their own. We do have a circus that will be here every day in the kids corral and something new this year is Jordan the Science Wizard, Gray said. The Wizard will perform three shows Thursday, June 14, and is sure to delight young and old with experiments and explosions. Also new this year is the Karaoke Rock Star, Gray said. Attendees can sing karaoke songs with the back-up of a live band. There will be daily horticulture gardening demonstrations, bonsai demonstrations and wine tasting on June 16. One of the more traditional aspects of a county fair includes the textile exhibits and contests. Howard Lowrie, 60, of Pollock Pines, has been crocheting since the mid80s and won a blue ribbon for an afghan he crocheted and entered two years ago. This year he is entering a 600-square tablecloth. Four-H and Future Farmers of America members will have their livestock on display throughout the fair. ies. Golf balls and tees. A pen. These are a few of the things men across America will open on Fathers Day, June 17. But gifts for dad dont have to be bland. There are ways to kick your gift giving up a notch and here are a few simple ideas to help get you on your way. Most men enjoy sports, grilling, smoking meat or doing something outdoors. If your dad is the stay-indoors type, he may enjoy a good video game. So, here are some ideas.
be electric (which I dont see the point) or wood/charcoal based. My family purchased a little smoker for me last year. Prices vary but the one I have is the Brinkmann Smoke-n-Grill, coming in at around $50. Ive had a lot of fun playing with different types of wood chips, charcoal and different things to throw in the smoker. If youd like something a little more versatile, try the

Hot sauces
There is a little company in the region started by a lawyer known as Judicial Flavors. These hot sauces and cook book all have a legal theme. Attorney Wendell Peters, aka The Chief Shyster, is the man behind the gavel. Try hot sauces such as Lawyers Breath, Contempt of Court, Juvenile Justice and Bailiff Brutality. These are fun, quirky and just right. Learn more about the various offerings at their website, judicialflavor.com.
great story and about 100 hours of game time. Ive personally played it through about three times because it just doesnt get old for me. I always see something new and different. The graphics are also amazing. This game is more about problem solving than fighting and the fights that do happen are turn based, so you dont have to wear out your thumbs trying to hit various button combinations as quickly as possible. A great game for dad to play with the kids is Mario Kart (for the Wii) or Mario Kart: Double Dash (for the GameCube, but playable on the

Springtime is a perfect time to hike Horsetail falls because of the snow-melt. The trailhead is about 6,000 feet above sea level, while the top of the falls is closer to 7200 feet. Enjoy the incredible views and sound of this impressive and powerful waterfall from a good distance.
he Sierra Nevada Mountains are known for their beautiful waterfalls, hiking trails and lakes and one of the most popular in the Lake Tahoe area is Horsetail Falls. People who head to Lake Tahoe along Highway 50 can see the impressive Horsetail Falls cascading down the mountain just after Twin Bridges. The falls is beautiful from the highway but a hike up towards the top of the Falls is one of the best hikes in the area, espe-
cially in springtime during snow-melt. Depending on how far up the mountain people want to hike will depend on the hiking level. If you just want a beautiful picnic lunch alongside a fast flowing river, it is an easy hike from Highway 50, otherwise the farther you go up the mountain the harder or more strenuous the adventure becomes. The nice thing about this hike is that its impressive no matter how far up the mountain one hikes. Park at the trailhead at Twin Bridges for a small fee. There are
usually a lot of cars parked in the lot on weekends, so there might quite a few people here because this is a very popular destination. Follow the signs to the wilderness boundary (not the Pyramid Creek loop trail). At the boundary, you will need to fill out a permit to continue up to the waterfall. The trail is unclear in places as you scramble up granite rocks to the waterfall. But just remember to keep the creek on your right and the waterfall ahead of you, and you will not get lost.

If you just want a beautiful picnic lunch alongside a fast flowing river, it is an easy hike from Highway 50, otherwise the farther you go up the mountain the harder or more strenuous the adventure becomes.
Depending on how far one scrambles up the mountain will determine how much time it takes. One can spend as little time as 30 minutes or as long as all day if you want to head up to the top. People are encouraged to look for two or three other tall unnamed cascades falling down the mountains to your right. These would be seasonal falls, only seen in the springtime. When you reach Horsetail Falls, you will be treated to a spectacular display of water rushing down the mountainside. A hike to the very top of Horsetail Falls, part of Pyramid Creek coming out of Desolation Wilderness, is a very difficult hike with some boulder climbing near the top of the falls, especially just below the crest of the falls at Avalanche Lake. There is no trail, as you are essentially scrambling over boulders. It can be a bit dangerous in places coming back down. These granite rocks are quite smooth and slippery, even when dry. You can take the Pyramid Creek loop trail on the way up or back to the falls (instead of going straight to the wilderness boundary, follow the signed trail towards the creek). If you do this, there is another really nice cascade right along the trail. I call this Lower Horsetail Falls. It is a really nice slide about 40 ft. high, and definitely worth seeing. The trailhead is about 6,000 feet above sea level, while the top of the falls is closer to 7200 feet. Because Horsetail Falls is so huge, it is practically impossible to measure its height with any degree of accuracy. Enjoy the incredible views and sound of this impressive and powerful waterfall from a good distance.

Experience truly delicious serving of jambalaya, red beans and rice, Cajun pork and corn macque choux. While youre there, enjoy your favorite drink the Pat OBriens Hurricane shipped here from New Orleans. Dont forget, though, that this is not the French Quarter, where you walk back to your hotel. Should you enjoy the Hurricane too well, event organizers will be glad to call for a cab. The event also boasts live and silent auctions that will include an opportunity for lunch with Sacramento County
Supervisor Roberta MacGlashan or Congressman Dan Lungren, a high school lettermans jacket or a round of golf at one of many top-rated golf courses in the area. Or, for the sports fan, there will also be choices from Kings tickets to a special package of box seats, special entry, and preferred parking to a Giants game. If youre more of an outdoors person, there are camper rental to day passes for skiing. If youre looking for a great night out, there is event a night at the steak house at Thunder Valley Casino. Proceeds from the auction go toward Folsom projects with important ties to the community such as Powerhouse Ministries and the Twin Lakes Food Bank.
