Transmit Diversity
Introduction
In Radio propagation environment, transmit signals may be adversely affected by fading and Path loss. The increase of deviation of the signal strength transmitted by the BTS can lead to increase of reception errors by the MS and therefore losing the synchronization between the MS and the BTS. The GSM1800 band faces a path loss value grater than the GSM 900 Band especially for the indoor coverage. The feature of Transmit diversity adds a diversity gain of about 3 dB to 4.5 dB of downlink signal strength. The features requires Antenna configured with 2 TXs, In Tunisiana Network, it can be applied only in the GSM 1800 Band, due to 900 Band Antenna TX-1 is occupied by GSM 900 and TX-2 is occupied by UMTS 900.
Benefits
Improve the quality and level of the signals received by the MS Reduce the effect of multipath fading Reduce the impact of Rayleigh fading improves the signal strength in areas with weak coverage, such as at cell edges, indoors, or in cars
Drawbacks
Physical Resources Waste Increase the number of intra-cell handovers
Dependencies
The gain of Transmit Diversity is high in scenarios where multipath effects are evident. In scenarios where few obstacles exist (such as grassland and sea), Transmit Diversity may result in insignificant diversity gain. BCCHs, SDCCHs, PDCHs, and CBCHs cannot form a channel group. They can only be used as independent channels.
Working Principle
Primary BPC
Transmit Diversity Channel Group
2 BPCs must be in the same double-transceiver. 2 Copies of the Signal are sent from one channel through a divider and amplified with a time delay (phase-shift) between the 2 signal copies At the MS side, received signal will be the sum of 2 copies giving a gain of 3 dB plus 1.5 dB diversity gain, Total = 4.5 dB (max)
