ASSY / PRODUCTION OF T-90
(BHISHMA)
The first indigenously
assembled T-90S, christened
as “Bhishma”, was handed
over to Indian army on 7 Jan
04. Moreover, India has
drawn plans for total
indigenous production of T-
90s (Bhishma) by yr 2006-07
with production cap of 100
tks per yr. With this licensed
mfr, T-90 bids fair to outflank
the Arjun and become the
spearhead of Indian Army.

EX TK PROJ
EX TK PROJ
India has dev a new
tk, integrating
features of the
Russian T-72 and the
indigenous Arjun T-72
MBT. The tk has been
code named as ‘Tk
Experimental’ (Ex
Tk).

ARJUN
EX TK TRIALS
The tk has already
undergone six
months of prelim
trials in Rajasthan
sec and was to be
put through a series
of further trials later.
TK EX under trials
TK EX - CHAR
• Cbt wt. The Tk Ex at 47 tons is heavier than the
T-72M1 (41s) and much lighter than the Arjun
MBT, which tips the scales at 58.8 tons.
• Power Plant. The Tk Ex has a 1000 hp power
plant (as of cbt improved T-72) giving a power to
wt ratio of 21 hp/ton for a wt of 47 tons.
• Suspension. Torsion bar with hydro strut; also
an improvement over the T-72 torsion bar
system.
• Dimensions. The usage of the T-72M1 chassis
gives the Tk Ex a lower silhouette than Arjun,
which stands tall at 3.03 Ms (AD gun mtd).
ARMT & NAV AIDS
• The Tk Ex utilizes the
Arjun MBT’s 120 mm
rifled gun firing unitary
APFSDS and HESH semi
combustible cart case
ammo.
• The Tk Ex also is fully “ni
ready” with the gnr having
a thermal imager
integrated with his main
sight.
• Aux Power Unit (APU) to
op the wpn sys in silent
EX TK Proj
watch mode.
PROTECTION
• The tk Ex utilizes the state-of-art comp armr
“Kanchan”, especially over its frontal arc (turret
as well as glacis), giving excellent protection
against both kinetic and chemical energy rds.
Kanchan is an extensively tested and successful
armr, which is aval for retrofit to other IFV
progm.
• Tk Ex also has fully integrated NBC protection.
ARJUN TK PROJ
ARJUN TK PROJ
• In 1972, the Indian Army
gave its req for a new MBT.
In 1974 it was decided to
replace Vijayanta by Arjun
as MBT. However, due to
delay and tech snags, only
124 tks have been ordered
for equipping 2 armr regts
by the yr 2004.
• The Arjun MBT has been dev
since 1974 under the dir of
the Cbt veh Research and
Dev Estb (CVR&DE). The
ARJUN under trials
first prototype appeared in
1984.
TECH SNAGS OF ARJUN
• Overheating of engine.
• Engine HP
• Recurring fault in tx/gear box.
• Locally mfr filters clog and allow fine sand into the
engine.
• Erratic FCS.
• Inaccurate gun at longer range.
• Poor op mob.
• The grooved /rifled gun cannot fire msls.
• Too hy i.e 58.5 tons wt.
• The tech of the tk is of late 60s/early 70s
• Inc cost est at RS 15 crore each.
ARJUN – SCHEMATIC VIEW
FUTURE DEV PLANS
• As per Indian Def Minister, T-
90 acquisition was made to
complement the indigenous
MBT Arjun and not to cripple
it.
• Army has already placed order
for 124 Arjun tks, however,
only 15 have been
manufactured so far.
• These tks have been issued to
43 armd regt ex 24 RAPID
(D) / 10 Corps / WC. India
plans to equip her 10 x regts
with Arjun.

AJEYA TK PROJ
T-72 (AJEYA) TK PROJ
• Known as Ajeya in the Indian
Army, the T-72M1 MBT
currently forms the
backbone of the Indian
Army’s tk fleet.
• India has 900 x T-72 Tks. The
upgradation of these tks was
planned in 1986, but the
Govt gave go-ahead sig and
cleared the proj in Jan 1997.
• The progm is based on
indigenous upgradation of T-
72 MBTs and budgeted at US
$ 343 million.

T-72 in desert op
OP BISON
• The progm to upgrd T-72
M1s is running behind
schedule. Around 200 T-72
M1s are to be fitted with
more powerful engines, expl
reactive armr, FCS, land nav
sys (LNS), VHF radios and
adv NBC eqpt. The
remaining T-72s will be
partially retrofitted
• The tk will feature a new
FCS, Gun Con Sys, GPS nav
eqpt, improved ammo and
improvement in 125 mm
Gun.

Arjun Chassis respectively.
• Tr SP gun has been named as “Bhim”. India plans to
equip around 30 arty regts with Bhim. The trials of these
guns were carried out and have been declared
successful.
• India has reached an agreement with South Africa for
provision of 252 x 155 mm guns. The deal might be for
