vehicle used for transporting
passengers. It also carries its own
engine or motor.
Q. Automobile industry

range of companies and
organizations involved in the design,
development, manufacture,
marketing and selling of motor
vehicles. It is one of the world's most
important economic sectors by
revenue.
HISTORY
Karl Benz
Benz Patent-Motorwagen
Built in 1886, is widely regarded as the first
automobile; that is, a vehicle designed to be
propelled by an internal combustion engine. The
original cost of the vehicle in 1885 was $1,000.
Bertha Benz
(3 May 1849 5 May 1944)
Wife and business partner of
automobile inventor Karl Benz
She was the first person to
drive an automobile over a
long distance. In doing so, she
brought the Benz PatentMotorwagen worldwide
attention and got the
company its first sales.

Model T
The Model T was introduced on October 1,
1908. It had the steering wheel on the left,
which every other company soon copied. The
entire engine and transmission were enclosed;
the four cylinders were cast in a solid block; the
suspension used two semi-elliptic springs. The
car was very simple to drive, and easy and
cheap to repair. It was so cheap at $825 in
1908 ($21,650 today) (the price fell every year)
that by the 1920s, a majority of American
drivers had learned to drive on the Model T
Model T
19081927 Ford Model T the most
widely produced and available 4seater car of the era. It used a
planetary transmission, and had a
pedal-based control system. Ford T
was proclaimed as the most
influential car of the 20th century in
the international Car of the Century
awards
Model T
Price
The standard 4-seat open tourer of 1909
cost $850; in 1913, the price dropped to
$550 and $440 in 1915. Sales were 69,762
in 1911; 170,211 in 1912; 202,667 in
1913; 308,162 in 1914; and 501,462 in
1915. In 1914, an assembly line worker
could buy a Model T with four months' pay.
By the 1920s, the price had fallen to $260
because of increasing efficiencies of
assembly line technique and volume.
