BIBLICAL LEADERSHIP

THE WONDERFUL
MINISTRY
OF
SHEPHERDING

A MIS-UNDERSTANDING
Many feel that an eldership is a
BOARD OF DIRECTORS such as
is found in a Corporation
A decision-making group!

NO!
Elders are shepherds who
care for sheep!

SHOULD ELDERS DECIDE:

1. Where the clock should be
placed?
2. How to repair the chairs?
3. What kind of microphone to
buy?

NO!
They must DELEGATE!
OTHERS CAN DO THESE WORKS!
What are some Scriptures that
teach DELEGATION?
Moses in Exodus 18
The apostles in Acts 6

WHAT ABOUT MAJOR

DECISIONS THAT AFFECT THE
WHOLE CHURCH?
Possible Spiritual

Business
Meetings

Elders, after consultation with the

congregation, make the final
DECISION

ANOTHER FIGURE:

ELDERS ARE:
PAPAS TO THE
HOUSEHOLD OF GOD!
DADDIES WHO CARE FOR
THE FAMILY OF GOD!!
BROTHERS WORKING
TOGETHER!

ELDERS OF THE CHURCH ARE

SHEPHERDS
1. The word, PASTOR is the
same word as shepherd
The LORD is my shepherd; I
shall not want..
(Psalm 23:1)

2. The word, Pastors refers to

ELDERS
And he gave some to be
apostles; and some, prophets;
and some, evangelists; and some,
pastors and teachers;
(Ephesians 4:11, 12 ASV)

ANOTHER TRANSLATION
And he gave the apostles, the
prophets, the evangelists, the

shepherds and teachers,

(Ephesians 4:11 ESV)

IDENTIFYING ELDERS
Now from Miletus he sent to
Ephesus and called the elders
of the church to come to him.
(Acts 20:17)

THE STATEMENT OF PAUL IN

VERSE 28
So keep watch over yourselves
and over all the flock which the
Holy Spirit has placed in your
care. Be shepherds of the
church of God, which he made his
own through the blood of his
Son.
(Acts 20:28 GNB)

ANOTHER TRANSLATION
Pay careful attention to
yourselves and to all the flock,
in which the Holy Spirit has made
you overseers, to

care for

the church of God, which he

obtained with his own blood.
(Acts 20:28 ESV)

PETER WAS AN ELDER

So I exhort the elders
among you, as a fellow elder
and a witness of the sufferings of
Christ, as well as a partaker in the
glory that is going to be
revealed:
(I Peter 5:1)

3. WHAT DID PETER SAY TO

THE ELDERS?
shepherd

the flock of

God that is among you,

exercising oversight, not under
compulsion, but willingly, as God
would have you; not for shameful
gain, but eagerly;
(I Peter 5:2)

THE WORK OF SHEPHERDS

1. The Leader of the SHEEP
2. The Feeder of the SHEEP
3. The Guide of the SHEEP
4. The Companion of the
SHEEP
5. The Protector of the SHEEP

FEED THE SHEEP

He must hold firm to the
trustworthy word as taught, so that
he may be able to give

instruction in sound doctrine

and also to rebuke those who
contradict it. (Titus 1:9)
INSTRUCT!
REBUKE the CONTRADICTOR!

PROTECT THE SHEEP

But David said to Saul, "Your

servant used to keep sheep

for his father. And when
there came a lion, or a bear,
and took a lamb from the
flock.,
(I Samuel 17:34)

I went after him and struck

him and delivered it out of
his mouth. And if he arose
against me, I caught him by
his beard and struck him
and killed him.
(I Samuel 17:35)

JESUS, THE GOOD SHEPHERD

1. He knows His sheep (John
10:3, 14, 27). Calls their name!
2. He leads, they follow (10:3, 4)
(10:27, 28)
3. Not like a hireling (10:13, 14)
4. DIE for the sheep!

(10:15-18)

5. Deep concern for Lost Sheep

(Luke 15)

So I exhort the elders among

you, as a fellow elder and a
witness of the sufferings of Christ,
as well as a partaker in the glory
that is going to be revealed:
shepherd the flock of God that is
among you, exercising oversight,
not under compulsion, but
willingly, as God would have you;
not for shameful gain, but eagerly;
(I Peter 5:1, 2)

not domineering over

those in your charge, but
being examples to the
flock.
(I Peter 5:3)

BEAUTIFUL QUALITIES OF
SHEPHERDS
(I Peter 5:1-4)
1. Willing!

(5:2)

2. Not greedy!

(5:2)

3. Not lording it! (5:3)

4. Good example

(5:3)

THE SHEEP AND THE SHEPHERDS

We ask you, brothers, to respect
those who labor among you and
are over you in the Lord and
admonish you,
and to esteem them very highly in
love because of their work. Be at
peace among yourselves.
(I Thessalonians 5:12, 13)

THE WORK OF SHEPHERDS

1. The Leader of the SHEEP
(Let us be willing to be led)
2. The Feeder of the SHEEP
(Let us be willing to receive
spiritual food)

3. The Guide of the SHEEP

(Let us be willing to be guided)
4. The Companion of the
SHEEP
(Let us truly be companions of the
elders)

5. The Protector of the SHEEP

(Let us realize that they watch
In behalf of our souls!)
Obey them that have the rule over
you, and submit to them: for they
watch in behalf of your souls, as
they that shall give account; that
they may do this with joy.,
9Hebrews 13:17)

THE LORD WILL BLESS HIS

FAITHFUL SHEPHERDS!

And when the chief Shepherd

appears, you will receive the
unfading crown of glory.
(I Peter 5:4)
GOD BLESS YOU!

LAYING ON OF HANDS
Three purposes:
1. Jesus laid hands on children
and PRAYED (Matthew 19:13)
2. Imparting the miraculous gifts
of the Holy Spirit
(Acts 8:12-15)
3. The Commitment to a ministry
(Acts 13:1-3)
