Assignment #1 Computer Lab Design

This document summarizes the design of a proposed computer lab, noting that it would be suitable for up to 35 students to work independently or collaborate in projects and discussions, but may not be ideal as a classroom due to limited visibility of instructors. The document suggests that providing dual-screen computers could allow its use as a tutorial classroom, and any lab computers would need to be securely locked to prevent theft.

COMPUTER LAB

DESIGN
COMMENTARY

PROS
Suitable for a departmental computer lab (example:
multimedia lab or animation lab)
Suitable to be used as a lab for students to do their
work personally. Or as a discussion room for students
to carry out project meetings and discussion.
Ideally to be used by 30 students but can cater up to
35.

CONS
Not so suitable to be used as a classroom. It is hard
for students to focus on the screen and the instructor
(some need to turn their backs to face them).
Students need to bring their own computers/laptops.
Not ideal to be used for more than 35 students as it
will get crowded and not all will have a table.

SUGGESTIONS
It can be turned into a tutorial classroom by the lab providing
computers with the software that can display the instructors
computer screen alongside the students computer screen in
the students computer screen. This way the students can
learn and follow step-by-step what the instructor is teaching.
This can be done without changing the lab design.
If the lab provides computers for the users it needs to
securely locked to the table to prevent theft.
