BIOMIMICRY IN

ENGINEERING

What is Biomimicry?
Biomimicryorbiomimeticsis the imitation of

the models, systems, and elements of nature

for
the
purpose
of
solving
complexhumanproblems.
Otto Schmitt, an American academic and
inventor, coined the termbio-mimeticsto
describe the transfer of ideas from biology to
technology.He
developed
theSchmitt
triggerwhile attempting to replicate the
biological system of nerve propagation.

In technical terms, it is defined as follows

The study of the formation, structure, or

function of biologically produced substances
and materials (as enzymes or silk) and
biological mechanisms and processes (as
protein
synthesis
or
photosynthesis)
especially for the purpose of synthesizing
similar products by artificial mechanisms
which mimic natural ones.

Biomimicry is based on the idea where we

treat nature as a Model, Measure and

Mentor.
Ideas are derived from natural organisms and
then applied to cater human needs.
They may be applied from micro level
systems, to macro level systems.

ADVANTAGES

EASY TO EXECUTE
All ideas are derived from basic natural

organisms/systems.
Observation is not time consuming and a lot
of research is not required as these organisms
are being observed since ancient times by
humans.

SUSTAINABILITY IS HIGH
As the ideas are derived from nature, they are

efficient.
Fuel consumption(if any) is low.
In case of any faults, the original design can
be observed easily.

INFINITE SCOPE
It can be applied to all systems.
It is a never ending field, as it can be

constantly improved.
New models can be studied and old models
can be replaced easily.

EXAMPLES

Woodpecker Hole Makers in Wall

Some birds like the

woodpecker use
their long, steep
beaks to make holes
in tree trunks.

Sharkskin Swimsuit Fabrics

Sharkskin has little

skin teeth called
dermal dentricles,
that facilitate easy
swimming by
disrupting
turbulence and eddy
flows.

Termite Den Modern Office Buildings

Termite dens are

extremely organized
and the termites
places in the den are
categorized
according to their
function in the den.

Lotus Leaves Waterproof and

Dirtproof Paint

The lotus flower is

sort of like the
sharkskin of dry
land. The top surface
of the leaf has the
ability to repel dust
and water.

Chlorophyll Solar Energy

Chlorophyll
present in plant
cells helps in
conversion of
light into energy.

Bat Flight SONAR and RADAR

Bats used ultrasonic

sound waves to
move by using time
taken by reflected
sound waves to be
received back.

Self healing
plastics

Inspired from

animals, these
plastics have power
of healing
themselves.
They are made from
hollow fibers filled
with epoxy resin
which regenerate
when they suffer
serious stresses.

Bodies of birds are

streamlined to allow
them to negotiate
air flow with ease.
