ALTERNATIVE

MEDICINE
Alternative medicine is a term that describes medical
treatments that are used instead of traditional (mainstream)
therapies. Some people also refer to it as “integrative,” or
“complementary” medicine.
Alternative medicine or fringe medicine consists of
practices claimed to have the healing effects
of medicine but which are disproven, unproven, impossible
to prove, or are excessively harmful in relation to their
effect; and where the scientific consensus is that the
therapy does not, or cannot, work because the known laws
of nature are violated by its basic claims; or where it is
considered so much worse than conventional treatment
that it would be unethical to offer as treatment.
 Treatments that are used instead of standard treatments.
Standard treatments are based on the results of scientific
research and are currently accepted and widely used.
Less research has been done for most types of alternative
medicine. Alternative medicine may include special
diets, megadose vitamins, herbal preparations, special
teas, and magnet therapy.
 According to the National Center for Complementary
and Integrative Health, actual alternative medicine is
very rare. The organization defines alternative medicine
as any non-conventional interventions that are used
instead of conventional treatments, not in conjunction
with them. Interventions like yoga, acupuncture, herbal
remedies and massage therapy may be alternative
treatments, but are considered alternative medicine only
when they're used in place of conventional treatments,
explained National Center for Complementary and
Integrative Health Deputy Director David Shurtleff.
Traditional alternative medicine
This field includes the more mainstream and accepted
forms of therapy such as acupuncture, homeopathy, and
Oriental practices. These therapies have been used for
centuries around the world. Traditional alternative
medicine may include:

 Acupuncture
 Homeopathy
 Unani
 What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a technique in which practitioners
stimulate specific points on the body—most often by
inserting thin needles through the skin. It is one of the
practices used in traditional Chinese medicine.
 What Is Homeopathy?
Homeopathy is a system of natural health care that has
been in worldwide use for over 200 years.Homeopathy
treats each person as a unique individual with the aim of
stimulating their own healing ability. A homeopath selects
the most appropriate medicine based on the individual's
specific symptoms and personal level of health.
It is recognized by the World Health Organization as the
second largest therapeutic system in use in the world.
While it is most popular in India and South America, over
thirty million people in Europe, and millions of others
around the world, also benefit from its use.
Unani medicine, also called Unani tibb, Arabian
medicine, or Islamic medicine, a traditional system of
healing and health maintenance observed in South Asia.
The origins of Unani medicine are found in the doctrines
of the ancient Greek physicians Hippocrates and Galen
Herbal medicine is thus one types of alternative medicine.
Herbal medicine relies on all sorts of roots, bark, flowers,
berries and leaves of various plants or fungi to either
prevent, cure or minimize a medical condition's effect on
the body. For example, Valerian root is believed by many to
help relax a person and might thus be used by some to help
treat insomnia. Otzi himself carried the woody fruit of a
fungus known as Piptoporus betulinus. Piptoporus
betulinus contains compounds that might be effective
against diarrhea cause by parasites or bacteria.
