VIRTUAL KEYBOARD

‘QWERTY’ Keyboard
Before going ahead we
should know what
QWERTY keyboard is.
If you have notice that
the upper row of the
keyboard contains some
keys.
 In this row the first key is the “Q” and the second is
“W”, the third one is the “E”, the fourth one is the “R”,
the fifth one is the “T” and the last one is the “Y”.
Combining all these keys form a word called
“QWERTY”.
Why Virtual Keyboard?
 In the fast moving lane of
technology, everything seems
to be going virtual. This is
bound to happen since
individuals want to comfortably
sit back, at the same time take
their daily dose of necessary
activity into account. That calls
for a lot of innovative products.
But products that fit this
grouping are cool only if they're
actually useful, else they are
deficient for this category.
 Today's world is very
compact.
 Every things are
becoming tiny and
more reliable using
new technology.
 Trend is changing
very quick and things
are becoming more
comfortable.
What is Virtual Keyboard ?
 A virtual keyboard is
actually a device, which
uses highly advanced
laser technology, to
project a full sized
keyboard on to a flat
surface.
 A camera tracks the
finger movements of the
typist to get the correct
keystroke.
Functionality

Projection Module
 A diffractive pattern
generator is typically
comprised of a coherent light
source such as a diode laser,
a collimating lens and a
phase hologram pattern
generator as shown ,

1 . Collimating lens
2 . Diode laser
3 . Diffractive optical
element (DOE)
4 . Heat sink
 This structure is moulded from a single piece of plastic to which
the diode laser is actively aligned and fixed in place. The DOE
is then snapped into the assembly from the other side without
requiring any additional alignment. A heat sink (4) is then
attached to the laser diode to complete the assembly.

 A picture of the fully

assembled micro-projector
module is shown in figure.
The entire projector
assembly measures less
than one cubic
centimetre.
Sensor Module
Reflected light from user interactions with the interface
surface is passed through an infra-red filter and imaged
on to a CMOS image sensor in the sensor module.

Custom hardware embedded in the sensor chip (the

Processing Virtual Interface Core Track Multiple) then
makes a real-time determination of the location of the
reflected light.

The processing core can TM reflection events

simultaneously and can thus support both multiple
keystrokes and overlapping cursor control inputs.
Illumination Module
Reference plane illumination (Micro-illumination
Module TM)

 An infra-red plane of light is generated just above,

and parallel to, the interface surface. This light is
invisible to the user and however a few millimeters
above the surface.
 When the user touches a key position on the interface
surface light is reflected from this plane and directed
towards the sensor module.
System Architecture

 This system contain

three main hardware
modules:

(1) 3D optical range

camera
(2) LCD projector
(3) Processing platform

Advantages & Disadvantages
ADVANTAGES:
√ Portability
√ Accuracy
√ Speed of text entry
√ Lack of need for flat or large typing surface
√ Flexibility
DIS-ADVANTAGES:
Short battery life.
Lighting conditions – In a brightly lit room, the virtual
keyboard is less visible.
Applications

 Personal Digital Assistants

(PDA)
 Space saving computers
 Laptops
 Industrial environments
 Transport (Air, Rail,
Automotive)
General Maintenance
 Avoid touching the keyboard sensing receiver window.
 Never touch the keyboard projection element.
 Avoid exposing the keyboard to moisture or extreme
temperatures.
 Do not disassemble or try to touch the inside of the
device.
 Do not attempt to charge the device with a different
charger than the one provided by VKB.
 If the windows become dirty clean only with a soft, lint
free dry cloth. Do not use any solvents or cleaners.
Laser safety precaution
 The Virtual Keyboard
device emits two laser
beams.
 According to
international standard
virtual keyboard is safe
under these laser
beams.
 Goggles are not
necessary to view the
keyboard.
Conclusion

Virtual Keyboard
is the new Era of
technology in
keyboards and
will popular in
future …..
