Advantages:
• Wide range of A-F mixtures 30:1 to 12:1
• Complete combustion: Clean emissions
• Improved performance & throttle response
• Reduced fuel consumption
Disadvantages:
• High cost
• Noisy operation

Noise Source Identification:
Design Solution
Reducing the magnitude of the impact
forces by reducing the mass and velocity of
the moving components without affecting
pump performance
• Reed style valves
• The outlet check valve mass : Composition
was changed from metal to ceramic 60%
decrease in mass.
• The armature velocity: reed-style valves were
attached to the armature face.
Reed valve placement on armature face

Hardware and equipment for pump
noise measurements
Noise Measurement Procedure
• The microphone signals :acquired at a rate of
48 kHz for 10 s & averaged .
• Filter this signal below 150 Hz and above 12.5
kHz as per the customer's specification .
• A-weighted to emphasize frequency content
for which the human ear is more sensitive.
• Analyse the signal using the Discrete Fourier
Transform method .
• Results : Overall SPL ; Individual SPL values
for frequency values.
Results

Overall SPL for competitor and Delphi/MM

pumps
Conclusion
• For a GDi pump noise sources were identified
as component impacts.
• Implementation of modified design resulted in
reduced level of noise.
• Proper design modifications of several
components will result in quiet automobile
operation.
eg. Rolls Royce Phantom, Mercedes S-Class
