    TORRY KANYAN SUPER TANKER WAS
    SHIPWRECKED OFF THE COAST OF CORNWALL,
    ENGLAND IN MARCH 1968. THE SPILLAGE WAS OVER
    100000 TONES OF CRUDE OIL .
    THIS INCIDENT WAS THE MAJOR REASON FOR THE
    MARPOL 73 CONVENTION.

    THIS WAS THE REASON FOR 78
    CONVENTION.

    OVER OCEANS AND OCEAN ANIMALS FROM
    POLLUTION THE INTERNATIONAL MARITIME
    ORGANISATION(IMO) INTRODUCE A
    CONVENTION FROM PREVENTING POLLUTION .

    MARPOL 73/78
    Adoption: 1973 (Convention), 1978 (1978 Protocol),
    1997 (Protocol - Annex VI); Entry into force: 2
    October 1983 (Annexes I and II).

    The Convention includes
    regulations aimed at
    preventing and minimizing
    pollution from ships - both
    accidental pollution and that
    from routine operations - and
    currently includes six
    technical Annexes. Special
    Areas with strict controls on
    operational discharges are
    included in most Annexes.

    BALLAST WATER MANAGEMENT
    PLAN

    In order to reduce the harmful effects on


    the marine environment that are spread
    through aquatic micro organisms
    transferred from one area to another
    through ballasting operations of the ship,
    the International Maritime Organization
    (IMO) adopted a convention in order to
    control and manage ships ballast and
    sediments ion on 13th February 2004.
