Industrial Training: Submitted by Mamta 15001005020 B.Tech (4 Yr) Chemical Engineering

The document provides information about the Atmospheric Vacuum Unit II (AVU II) at Panipat Refinery in India. It summarizes that AVU II has a capacity of 6 million metric tonnes per annum and uses atmospheric and vacuum distillation to separate crude oil into various products. It includes block diagrams and descriptions of the process units involved like the crude desalter, preheat trains, distillation columns, and products.

Chemical Engineering
• Company profile
• Capacity of Panipat Refinery
• Block diagram of panipat refinery
• Refinery products
• Atmospheric and Vacuum Distillation column II unit
• Flow sheet of AVU II
• Desription of AVU II
Set up in 1998
Panipat
Refinery located
in Baholi village,
Panipat, One of South East Asia’s
Haryana largest integrated
petrochemical plants
 Present capacity : 15 MMTPA
 Designed for high sulphur crude
REFINERY PRODUCTS
 AVU of Panipat Refinery Expansion project is designed to process 6
MMTPA( Million Metric Tonne Per Annum )

 AVU unit is located in 24800 square metres.

 Desalted crude flows to atmospheric and vacuum distillation through

crude pre flashing section.

 Atmostpheric & Vaccum Distillation are the main primary separation

processes producing various straight run products. This unit is called
mother unit.
Feed: Crude oil

Sections in unit :
• Crude desalting section
• Preflash section
• Atmospheric distillation column
• Vacuum distillation column

Capacity : 6 MMTPA
FLOW SHEET
 Storage tanks:Crude is pumped from storage
tanks by centrifugal pumps

Preheat train 1:
 Crude is first preheated in the preheat train 1 in
which 4 shells are connected in parallel.
 In heat exchangers , we have
• On shell side – product like Diesel, Kero
• On tube side – crude
 Temprature : 30 – 35 degree celcius
Desalter:
Objective : For removal of salts and water
 2 stage desalter are used in AVU II
 1st and 2nd stage desalter vessels are connected in
series
 Fresh water is mixed with crude for dissolve the salts
 Salt rich water phase from desalter is sent to ETP
 Oil phase from desalter is sent to further processing
 Temprature : 123- 125 degree celcius
 Desalting water flow counter current to the crude flow as
there remains constant concentration gradient.
Preheat train 2:
 Crude fron 2nd stage desalter outlet at a temp.
Of 122.7 – 135.2 degree celcius is routed to
preheat train 2.
 Preheat train 2 has two parallel branches of
preheat exchangers.
 In one branch , crude is heated by kero CR
followed by LGO product .
 In other parallel train, crude preheating is done
by the product followed by LVGO product.
Preflash drum:
 It is a horizontal vessel which minimize level
fluctuations.
 The lighter components seperated from preflash drum
go to the reflux drum
 The heavier liquid seperated is pumped to crude
preheat train 2.
 Then crude from preflash drum is sent to preheat train
3.
Atmospheric Heater:
 Preheated crude is heated and partially
vaporised.
 Outlet temprature : 370 – 375 degree celcius
 It is 8 pass cabin type furnace.
 28 burners are present in CDU furnace.
 The air which is used in heater is firstly heated in
air preheater
Atmospheric column:
 It has 55 trays.
 6 trays are in the stripping section.
 Crude feed enter the atm. Column avove 6th tray.
 Valve trays are used.
Products of atmospheric column:
• Heavy Naptha
• Kerosene
• Light gas oil ( LGO )
• Heavy gas oil (HGO)

Vacuum heater:
 Hot RCO from atm. Column bottom is heated and
partially vaporized.
 The mixed vapour and liquid stream from the heater is
sent to the flash zone of vacuum column.
 Temprature : 375 degree celcius.
Vacuum column:
 RCO from vacuum
heater is fed to the
vacuum column at the
flash zone above 6th
tray.
 Pressure : 60 – 70
mmHga
 Temprature : 382 – 398
degree celcius
Products of vacuum column:
• Vacuum diesel
• Light vacuum gas oil ( LVGO)
• Heavy vacuum gas oil( HVGO)
• Vacuum residue
