INFLUENCE

LINE
3
If a structure is subjected to
a live or moving load, the
variation of the shear and
bending moment in the
member is best described
using the influence line.
3
An influence line represents
the variation of either the
reaction, shear, moment, or
deflection at a specific point
in a member as a
concentrated force moves
over the member
.

PROPERTIES OF INFLUENCE LINE
• Value of the function due to single
concentrated load.
PROPERTIES OF INFLUENCE LINE
• Value of the function due to multiple
concentrated load.
PROPERTIES OF INFLUENCE LINE
• Value of the function due to
uniformly distributed load
PROPERTIES OF INFLUENCE LINE
• Value of the function for any type of
load.
NOTE:

Influence lines represent the effect of a

moving load only at a specified point
on a member, whereas shear and
moment diagrams represent the effect
of fixed loads at all points along the
axis of the member.
This is how it is analyze.

PROCEDURE FOR ANALYSIS
1. Tabulation of Values
a. Place a unit load at various
locations, x along the member
b. Calculate the function
(reaction, shear, or moment)
for each value of x
PROCEDURE FOR ANALYSIS
1. Tabulation of Values
c. Tabulate the values of x with
corresponding value of the
function
d. Construct the influence
diagram by plotting the
tabulated values
PROCEDURE FOR ANALYSIS
2. Influence-line Equations
The influence line can also be constructed
by placing the unit load at a variable
position x on the member and then
computing the value of R,V,or M at the
point as a function of x. In this manner, the
equations of the various line segments
composing the influence line can be
determined and plotted.
PROCEDURE FOR ANALYSIS
3. Müller-Breslau's Principle
by Heinrich Müller-Breslau in 1886

It states that the influence line for a function

(reaction, shear, or moment) is to the same
scale as the deflected shape of the beam
when the beam is acted upon by the function.
