What is bio battery?

 Energy storing device

 The substrate material,
organic or Inorganic
compounds => electrical
energy
 Enzymes,
microorganisms => p+e
History
 1912, the first microbial BFC.
 1964, the first enzyme-based
biofuel cell .
 2003, biobattery using human
blood.
 2005, biobattery using human
urine.
 2007, biobattery using
carbohydrates by sony.
 2013, Microbial fuel cell.
 2017, stretchable battery using
fabric.
Components
 Anode

 Cathode

 Electrolyte

 Separator
How bio battery works?
 An anode, cathode, separator and electrolyte
which are the basic components to any cell battery.

 Between the anode and cathode lies an electrolyte

which contains separator.

 Separator keeps the anode and cathode separated-

>avoids electrical short circuits.

 System allows flow of electrons and protons which

generates electricity.
Glucose
 Bio batteries are heavily based on the
amount of glucose available.

 Soda, waste materials or glucose from

living organisms.

 From glucose protons and electrons.

 Exhibits process of enzymatic hydrolysis.

Process
 Human bodies convert food to energy using
enzymes.

 Bio batteries use enzymes to convert

glucose into energy

Glucose -> gluconolactone +2H+ + 2e-

Process
 Electron and proton travel through the
electrolyte, where the separator redirects
electrons to go through the mediator to get
to the cathode.

O2 +4H+ + 4e- -> 2H2O

Advantages

 Quick rechargeable batteries

 Eco friendly

 Clean, non-toxic source of energy

 Raw material available easily and plenty

 Extremely safe
Disadvantages

 Bio batteries are less likely to retain most of

their energy.

 This causes problem when it comes to long term

usage and storage of energy.
Applications

 Electronic devices

 Defense purposes

 Medicine

 Fuel synthesis
Future scope
 Serve as a new form of energy which is environmental
friendly as well as successful, in producing and reserving
energy.

 Although the batteries are still being tested before being

commercially sold, several research teams and engineers
are working for further development of these batteries .

 In order to make it more eco friendly researches are

being conducted to produce electricity from bio batteries
using human sweat.
