THE HISTORY OF ADOBE PHOTOSHOP

(1988 -2017)
1.) BEFORE IT WAS PHOTOSHOP
•The software we now know as Photoshop
had its beginnings in 1987, when Thomas
Knoll, a Ph.D. student, began to write
programming code that would display
grayscale images on a monochrome display.
He did his work on a Macintosh Plus.
• Thomas’s brother John was working at Industrial Light
and Magic at the time, and became interested in the
image-processing tools his brother was working on.
The two worked together to bring the bits of code
and tools together into a unified program, which was
originally called “Display.” Display became
“ImagePro” for a short time, before the Photoshop
name we all know and love came about in March of
1988.
2. EARLY PHOTOSHOP
Thomas and John began presenting
Photoshop to several Silicon Valley
companies, and in March of 1988,
Photoshop version 0.87 was licensed to
Barneyscan, and about 200 copies of the
program were distributed this way.
At this time, pixel-based image editing
software was just coming to the market.
Some of the features in the earliest version
of Photoshop were:
Displaying and saving several file formats
Soft edge selections
Levels for tone adjustments
Color Balance, Hue, and Saturation color
adjustments
Painting capabilities
3) ADOBE PHOTOSHOP 1.0 (1990)
In September of 1988, Photoshop was first
demonstrated to Russell Brown, Adobe’s Art
Director, and Adobe Cofounder John
Warnock. Around the same time, the first
color PostScript printer was shipped,
sparking the desktop publishing era.
By April 1989, the Knoll brothers had
worked out a licensing agreement for Adobe
to begin distributing Photoshop. Photoshop
was in development for 10 months before
Photoshop 1.0 was released, exclusively for
Macintosh, on February 19, 1990.
4) ADOBE PHOTOSHOP 1.0 FEATURES

Graphic designers quickly adopted


Adobe Photoshop, putting it on the
path to becoming the industry
standard it is today. Features in
Adobe Photoshop 1.0 for Mac
included: Color correction, Image
Output optimization, Curves and
Levels.
5) PHOTOSHOP 2.0 JUNE (1991)
In September of 1988, Photoshop was first

6) PHOTOSHOP 2.5 (1992)
In April 1992, Microsoft began shipping Windows
3.1, and sold one million copies in its first two
months on the market. Photoshop was still a Mac-
only program at this time. In February of 1993,
Adobe shipped Photoshop 2.5 for Macintosh.
Photoshop 2.5 for Mac codename: Merlin
Photoshop 2.5 added these features:
Palettes
Support for 16-bit files
Two months later, in April 1993, Adobe brought
Photoshop 2.5 to the Windows, IRIX, and Solaris
platforms. Image editing began expanding to new
markets such as art restoration, law enforcement,
photo journalism, and the medical field. Photoshop
2.5 was the first version for Windows users.
Photoshop 2.5 for Windows codename: Brimstone.
7) PHOTOSHOP 3.0 (1994)

Photoshop 3.0 was released in 1994–


for Macintosh in September, and for
Windows, IRIX, and Solaris in
November. Photoshop was by then
entrenched in the industry, and was
used in many areas of publishing,
filmmaking, advertising and marketing.
8) PHOTOSHOP 3.0 FEATURES
Photoshop 3.0 codename: Taking Tiger Mountain
Photoshop 3.0 brought us layers and tabbed
palettes.
In 1994, Adobe acquired Aldus, its main competitor
in the graphics and publishing software space. And
in 1995, Adobe purchased Photoshop from its
creators, Thomas and John Knoll.
In 1995, digital cameras reached the hands of
home computer users, which brought a wider
interest in image processing to the general public.
In 1996, Adobe released PhotoDeluxe 1.0,
enabling consumers to work with scanned and
digital photos.
9) PHOTOSHOP 4.0 (1996)

In November of 1996, Photoshop


4.0 was released simultaneously
for Mac and Windows.
10) PHOTOSHOP 4.0 FEATURES
Photoshop 4.0 codename:
Big Electric Cat
Photoshop 4.0 introduced
adjustment layers and actions,
allowing users to perform non-
destructive image adjustments
and automate many tasks.
PHOTOSHOP 5.0
Released in: May 1998.
Was named with the code word
“Strange Cargo”.

Features:
Undo command for multiple
times,
Managing color and
Magnetic Lasso was
introduced in this version
PHOTOSHOP 5.5
Released in: February 1999.
Was named with the code word
“Strange Cargo”.

Features:
Supports Macintosh and Windows
only.
Save Web feature was added and
the extract feature was introduced
in this version,
Image slicing property was first time
introduced and added rollover
effects.
PHOTOSHOP 6.0
Released in: September 2000.
Was named with the code word
“Venus in Furs”

Features:
Vector shapes,
Liquify Filter,
Layer styles,
Dialog box were added,
User Interface was updated.
PHOTOSHOP 7.0
Released in: March 2002.
Was named with the code word
“Liquid Sky”.

Features:
Healing Brush tool was introduced,
Designed Text in vector,
And Photoshop file browser was
first time introduced.
PHOTOSHOP CS ( CREATIVE SUITE)

Released in: October 2003.


Was named with the code word
“Dark Matter”.
Features:
Camera RAW 2.x,
Highly modified “Slice Tool”,
Shadow/Highlight command,
Match Color command,
Lens Blur filter,
Smart Guides,
Real-Time Histogram was introduced in this
version.
A feature that detects and ignores images of
banknotes was added.
PHOTOSHOP CS2
Released in: April 2005.
Was named with the code word
“Space Monkey”.
Features:
Camera RAW 3.x,
Smart Objects,
Image Warp,
Spot healing brush,
Red-Eye tool,
Lens Correction filter,
Smart Sharpen,
Smart Guides,
Vanishing Point was introduced,
It furnished Memory management for 64-bit power
PC G5s.
PHOTOSHOP CS3
Released in: April 2007.
Was named with the code
word “Red Pill”.
Features:
Black-and-white conversion adjustment,
Auto Align and Auto Blend,
Smart (non-destructive) Filters,
Mobile device graphic optimization was introduced in
this version,
Furnishes native support for Intel base Macintosh
platform and improved support for Windows Vista,
Revised user interface, alterations to Curves, Vanishing
Point, Channel Mixer, Brightness and Contrast, and the
Print dialog were also introduced.
Features like cloning and healing were improved.
PHOTOSHOP CS4
ADOBE PHOTOSHOP CS4 WAS RELEASED IN
OCTOBER 2008, AROUND EIGHTEEN MONTHS
AFTER THE RELEASE OF PHOTOSHOP CS3 IN
2007.
Features:
New Adjustments window,
Use dodge/burn without affecting other
areas,
Auto blend feature improved,
Content aware cropping,
Pixel grid for editing individual pixels,
New Adjustments panel,
New Masks panel, 3D object painting,
Content aware scaling, 3D object/property editing,

PHOTOSHOP CS5
Released in: April 2010
White Rabbit' was the developers codename for
Adobe Photoshop CS5.

Features:
Content Aware Fill,
Intelligent selection technology,
Advanced HDR processing,
Improved raw processing,
Extended painting effects,
Localised Warp tool,
Auto lens correction,
Workspace management,
Advanced 3D options (CS5 Extended),
and 30 JDI (Just Do it) additions.
2012: ADOBE PHOTOSHOP CS6
Adobe Photoshop CS6 was released in May
2012, one year after the release of CS5.1 and
around two years after the release of the
original CS5 software.
Fact: Adobe Photoshop CS6 was the sixteenth version of
Photoshop released under the Adobe brand name and the
eighteenth version of Photoshop ever created.

Fact: 'Superstition' was the developers codename for


Adobe Photoshop CS6.

A number of new tools and features were added in CS6 including a


Content-aware patch, Tilt Shift, Skin tone and face detection, an
adaptive wide angle filter, paragraph and character styles and Snap
to Pixel for vector tools and transforms. Many tools were also
enhanced including the crop tool which received a straighten
option.
Adobe Photoshop CC was released in
June 2013, around thirteen months after
the release of Photoshop CS6. Adobe
Photoshop CC marked a new era for the
application as it moved away from the
Creative Suite series and began a new
journey under the Creative Cloud (CC)
name.
Photoshop CC also brought support for Camera RAW 8.
Fact: Adobe Photoshop CC was released almost 25 years after
the creation of Photoshop 0.63.
Fact: 'Lucky 7' was the developers codename for Adobe
Photoshop CC.
