INTRODUCTION
 Electrical activity is the basis of physiological
processes in living organisms
 Electrical activity depend on the ionic movement
across the cell membrane through ion channel
 The most important ions excitation are Na, K, Ca
and Cl
 Excitable tissues are able to initiate and propagate
action potentials to accomplish their functions. In
order to understand action potentials, it is
necessary to understand electrical differences
across cell membranes and their causes.

TERMINOLOGY
 Resting membrane potential (RMP)
 Membrane voltage usually around –70 mV
 Depolarize
 Membrane voltage moves toward 0 mV
 Repolarize
 Membrane voltage returns to –70 mV
 Hyperpolarize
 Membrane voltage moves even further away
from 0 mV
 Goes past –70 mV
