    Noise is an unwanted random signal that is added to a desired signal as it travels through a medium, distorting the signal. There are different types of noise including thermal noise from charge carrier agitation, shot noise from the discrete nature of charges, burst noise in semiconductors, and coupled noise induced from external environments. Distortion is the alteration of a signal's original characteristics, such as amplitude or phase distortion changing the signal's waveform. Both noise and distortion make accurately receiving the desired signal more difficult.
