PRESTRESSED

CONCRETE
By: Lois B. Bernarino
1. IDENTIFY IT’S WEAKNESS
Before we can understand, “what is Prestressed Concrete”
CONCRETE’S WEAKNESSES:
1. Concrete can withstand a
tremendous amount of compressive
stress, but when you try to
pull it apart, it gives up easily.

2. It’s brittle.
It doesn’t have any “give” or stretch
or ductility.
3
Combine these two
weaknesses, and you get…

4
Combine these two
weaknesses, and you
get cracks.
5
CONCRETE LOVES TO
CRACK.
6
What is Prestressed
Concrete?
“…a structural material that allows for
predetermined, engineering stresses to be
placed in members to counteract the stresses
that occur when they are subject to loading.”
7
What is Prestressed
Concrete?
“It combines the high strength compressive
properties of concrete with the high tensile
strength of steel.”

capable of being drawn out or stretched.

Where is it usually used?

STEEL REINFORCEMENT BARS ALONE WON’T BE
SUFFICIENT TO PROVIDE THE NECESSARY
TENSILE STRENGTH.

3 TYPES OF
PRESTRESSED
CONCRETE

13
Pre-tensioned
Concrete

▪ In this method,
wires or tendons
are tensioned at
first and concrete
is poured later.
14
Pre-tensioned
Concrete

▪ It creates a good
bondage between
the tendon and
concrete.

15
Pre-tensioned
Concrete
▪ As a result, the
tendons are
protected from
corrosion and
tensions are
transferred
directly. 16
Pre-tensioned
Concrete
▪ Tendons are
anchored and
stretched and the
stress is
transferred to the
concrete when it is
hard 17
Pre-tensioned
Concrete

▪ Then the tendon

tries to get back to
the original length,

18
Pre-tensioned
Concrete

▪ but resisted by the

bond between the
concrete hence it
induces
compressive force
in it.
19
Pre-tensioned
Concrete

▪ but resisted by the

bond between the
concrete hence it
induces
compressive force
in it.
20
Bonded Post-
tensioned Concrete

▪ Similar to pre-
stressing but here
concrete is poured
first then tendons
are tensioned
21
Bonded Post-
tensioned Concrete

▪ Tendons are
placed at suitable
places in the
member and then
casting is done.
22
Unbonded Post-
tensioned Concrete

▪ It is little different
from bonded post-
tensioned
concrete. It allows
freedom to move
the cables
23
Unbonded Post-
tensioned Concrete

▪ Each tendon is
coated with grease
and covered by
plastic.

24
Unbonded Post-
tensioned Concrete

▪ Stress transfer to
the concrete is
achieved by the
cables through
anchors.
25
Unbonded Post-tensioned Concrete

There are some advantages to this like:

1. The ability to distress tendons before

trying to repair work.
2. The ability to individually adjust cables

26
disadvantages like if damaged, one or more than cable can be distress itself and burst out
of the slab.

AND GOD BLESS!
