Critical reading is analyzing a text to understand the deeper meaning and evaluate the validity of facts, opinions, and inferences presented. It also determines the three types of claims made in a text: claims of fact which are based on verifiable data; claims of policy that assert solutions to problems; and claims of value that make judgements based on established standards. Examples of each type of claim are provided.
