General Definition

Social Contract Theory

AGREEMENT

Social Contract Theory states that a person's moral and/or

political obligations are dependent upon a contract or
agreement formed among them.

PEOPLE

the terms of this contract are written according to the

people living in a society.

POLITICAL PRINCIPLE

method of justifying political principles by agreement

among rational, free and equal persons.
Origin of Hobbes' Social Contract Theory

In Leviathan, Hobbes identifies a first law of nature:

“by which a man is forbidden to do that which is destructive of his life

or taketh away the means of preserving the same, and to omit that by
which he thinketh it may be best preserved.” [Leviathan, Ch. VI]

From the first law, Hobbes derives a second:

“...that a man be willing, when others are so too, as far forth as for
peace and defense of himself, he shall think it necessary to lay down
this right to all things; and be contented with so much liberty against
other men as he would allow other men against himself.” [Leviathan,
Ch.VI]

CONTRACT
As for Hobbes, it is

 the mutual
transferring of right.

In nature, everyone has

the right to everything.
SOCIAL
CONTRACT
 the condition in which
people give up
individual rights and
liberty in exchange for
common security
 limited right for self-
preservation.
- eg. property, marriage,
killing
ARTIFICIAL MAN :
Hobbes’ image of a State on the
model of the individual human body.

This is the front piece of the 1660 edition of Hobbes’

Leviathan. The term ‘body politic’ comes from this image.

Key takeaway:

Even though governmental structures have changed

radically and political philosophers operate on different
principles, it is still common to hear proposals that we must
give up liberty for security. Such proposals are directly
related to Hobbes’ ideas
