The Bastion Bungalow is located in the heart of Fort
Kochi, near the seashore and Vasco da Gama Square.

The building is a protected monument of the


Archaeology Department. The total area of the
building is 542 square meters or approximately 5800
square feet.

LOCATION
HISTORY
• Originally built by the Portuguese as Fort Immanuel in the 16th century ,
the Dutch invasion in 1663 led to the destruction of the first structure.

• The sea-facing heritage building was re-constructed by the Dutch in


1667 as part of the Stromberg Bastion of the Dutch fort.

• The Portuguese had built Fort Emmanuel with seven bastions the 16th
century,

• After the fort was destroyed by the Dutch, the Dutch built a smaller fort
around the bastions, of which the present Bastion Bungalow is a part.

• This building has been witness to the vibrant trade that dominated Fort
Kochi for more than 400 years.

• What remained was the Stormberg Bastion, one third in size, and it
would be remodelled into the mighty Bastion Bungalow that we see
today.

• Built in the Indo-European style of architecture, it was named Bastion


Bungalow by the British and served as a residence-cum-office for
government officials.

MATERIALS USED
The long, open verandas and its tiled roof in geometric patterns
attracting tourists from all over the world.

Made entirely of brick, laterite and wood, it is said that beneath its
ground floor lies a secret network of tunnels, adding to the mystique
of the entire place

The structure is spherical in nature , the first floor has a unique view
with wooden portion in the front.
• Built in the Indo-European style of architecture, it was named Bastion
Bungalow by the British and served as a residence-cum-office for
government officials.

• The northern and western outer portion of the Bastian Bungalow


looks exactly like a Bastion. The Bungalow on top of the Bastion is built
in European style with large rooms and high roof ceiling.

• Sculptures made by 10 artists from Kerala are on display on the


grounds of the bungalow.

• The bungalow also has a tunnel in its basement which is closed to the
public as the destination of the tunnel remains unexplored and
unclear.

• Two canons from the colonial period are preserved on the balcony of
the Bastion Bungalow.

Architectural features

• Currently the sub collectors residence,
the bungalow was once used as a
residence cum office for government
officials during the British reign
• Part of it is also used as an art gallery
and museum
PRESENT SITUATION
The building survived unscathed through the British period in Kochi, and
was in good enough condition that after India gained Independence, it
served as the official residence of Sub-Collector of Fort Kochi for a
while.

The Kerala government is planning to give the centuries old Bastion


Bungalow in Fort Kochi a makeover and convert it into a world-class
heritage museum announced in February 2016.The state department of
archaeology in Kerala has declared the bungalow a protected
monument.

Ramachandran said that Fort Kochi and nearby Mattancherry are
historically significant as they were occupied by the Portuguese, Dutch
and British and were active commercial centres in the past. The
renovated museum will reflect these diversities
