TYPES OF DEHUMIDIFIER

Refrigerant dehumidifier

•The cold evaporator coil of the refrigeration device condenses the water, which
is removed, and then the air is reheated by the condenser coil.

•This process can achieve relative humidity of 40%.

Desiccant dehumidifier

•These dehumidifiers uses desiccant which is adsorbent and have large affinity
towards water.

•Regeneration of adsorbent are also done by heated air.

•These dehumidifiers can produce relative humidity up to 5%.

WORKING OF DESICCANT
DEHUMIDIFIER
DESIGN BASIS

•Volume of room to be conditioned= 2900 ft3

•Current room condition= 85 0f, 85% RH, Absolute humidity= 160 grains/pound
(Gr/lb)

•Desired room condition= 32% RH, 50 Gr/lb.

•Door openings= 2 doors of 3 ft * 7 ft.

•Number of people working= 4.

•Fixed openings= 54 ft2

•Construction= Aluminum frame construction.

MOISTURE LOADS

•Permeation load

•Load through door

•Population load

•Load through fixed opening

PERMEATION LOAD -
Permeation is the migration of water vapor through the room construction because
of grain difference to balance the partial pressure.
Permeation load can be calculated as below.

V (ft3) × AC × ΔG (gr/lb) × MF × CF = Permeation load (lb/hr)

7000 (gr/lb) ×14 (Ft3/lb)

V = Volume of room in ft3.

AC = Air change factor for room volume from Table.

ΔG = Difference in current and desired absolute humidity in gr/lb.

MF = Migration factor from Table.

CF = Construction Factor from Table.

14 = Conversion factor for ft3 to lb. ( Density of dry air= 0.071 lb/ft3)

7000 =Conversion factor in gr/lb, since 1 lb= 7000 grains.

V (ft3) × AC × ΔG (gr/lb) × MF × CF = Permeation load (lb/hr)
7000 (gr/lb) ×14 (ft3/lb)

2900 (ft3) × 0.65 /hr × 110 (gr/lb) × 1 × 1 = 2.11(lb/hr).

7000 (gr/lb) × 14 (ft3/lb)

Hence, permeation load = 2.11 (lb/hr)

LOAD THROUGH DOORS

Another source of moisture is opening of the doors. According to the ASHRAE standards
62.2 flow rate of outside humidified air coming inside the controlled area is considered as
12 ft3/min per ft2 (CFM/ft2) of opening area.

AO(ft2) × OT (min/hr) × ΔG(gr/lb) × 12 (CFM/ft2) = Door moisture (lb/hr)

7000 (gr/lb) × 14 (ft3/lb)

AO = Area of opening in ft2.

OT = Opening time of door in min/hr.

ΔG = The deviation from outside to the desired condition ( gr/lb).

12 =Standard ingress of moisture in ft3/min/ft2 ( CFM/ft2)

14 =Conversion factor for ft3/lb.

7000 =Conversion factor for gr/lb.

AO(ft2) × OT (min/hr) × ΔG(gr/lb) × 12 (CFM/ft2) = Door moisture (lb/hr)
7000 (gr/lb) × 14 (ft3/lb)

42(ft2) × 1.5 (min/hr) × 110(gr/lb) × 12 (CFM/ft2) = 0.85 (lb/hr)

7000 (gr/lb) × 14 (ft3/lb)

Hence, Moisture load through the door is 0.85 lb/hr.

POPULATION LOAD

People give off moisture due to respiration. This is the function of the number of
people and their activity. For example, a worker lifting boxes will generate 4 to 8 times
the moisture than the worker working at lab bench.
ASHRAE data on the amount of water added per person is shown in table below.
Considering medium factory work, evap. Rate will be 0.475 lb/person/hr.

Number of people working in the room = 4.

Population load= 0.475 × 4 = 1.9 lb/hr.

Hence, population moisture load is 1.9 lb/hr.

LOAD THROUGH FIXED OPENING

Fixed openings such as cracks, feed opening, conveyer openings contribute to the
moisture entrance inside the conditioned room.
Calculation of load is similar to the door load calculation.

48 (ft2) × 60 (min/hr) × 110 (gr/lb) × 12 (CFM/ft2) = 39 (lb/hr).

7000(gr/lb) × 14 (ft3/lb)

Hence, Moisture load through the fixed opening is 39 (lb/hr).

Total moisture load = permeation load + load through the door + population load
+ load through fixed opening.

= 2.11 + 0.85 + 1.9 + 39

=43.86 (lb/hr).

Hence, Total moisture load in filling room = 43.86 (lb/hr)= 307020 (gr/hr)= 5117(gr/min).
GRAINS PER POUND OF AIR LEAVING DEHUMIDIFIER.
From following performance curve we can calculate flow rate in grains/pound.
Inlet moisture condition (s) = 50 (gr/lb).

Temperature in the room =850F.

Outlet moisture condition from dehumidifier (G) = 17 (gr/lb).

OUTLET AIR FLOW FROM DEHUMIDIFIER IN CFM

CFM of air leaving dehumidifier into the conditioned room can be calculated
by following formulae.
de
X (CFM) = C (ft3/lb) × moisture load (gr/min)
(S - G)(gr/lb)

C = 14 constant ( Inverse of air density)

S = 50 (gr/lb) = moisture requirement of controlled room.
G = 17(gr/lb) = moisture of air leaving dehumidifier.
X = Delivery air rate from dehumidifier to space in CFM
Hence,
X (CFM) = 14(ft3/lb) × 5117 (gr/min)
(50 - 17)(gr/lb)

=2171 CFM = 3689 CMH

Hence, required dehumidifier should have capacity of delivering 3689 CHM

of dry air into filling room.
