Mode
It is a branch of science which deals
with the collection, organization,
representation, analysis and
interpretation of data.

Collected
Observation
Raw data that are presented in
the form of array of numbers.
It can be arranged in (1) from largest to
smallest(descending order), or (2) smallest to
largest(ascending order), or even (3) stem
and leaf diagram.
Raw data that are presented in
the form of a frequency
distribution.

Mean
• Short term for “ARITHMETIC MEAN”
• It is the average value of all the data in the set.
• It is the most commonly used measure of central
tendency.

𝑠𝑢𝑚 𝑜𝑓 𝑎𝑙𝑙 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑒𝑠

𝑥ҧ =
𝑛𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑒𝑠
Illustrative Example
Given the grades of 12 students in Mathematics.
83 78 76 94 81 86
79 77 81 84 81 85
FIND THE MEAN:
83 + 78 + 76 + 94 + 81 + 86 + 79 + 77 + 81 + 84 + 81 + 85
𝑥ҧ =
12

985
𝑥ҧ = = 82.08

Median
• It refers to the bottom 50% and top 50% of
the data.
• To obtain the median, we arranged the data
in ascending or descending order and then
determine the middle value in the ordered
list.
• If the number of data is even number, get the
2 middle scores, add it up then divide by 2.
Illustrative Example
Given the grades of 12 students in Mathematics.
83 78 76 94 81 86
79 77 81 84 81 85
FIND THE MEDIAN:
76 77 78 79 81 81 81 83 84 85 86 94
Mode
• It is the mode occurring score in the data.
• It is the value of the observed data that appears most often.
• It does not require computation.
• Unimodal – one mode
• Bimodal – two modes
• Multimodal – three or more modes
• No mode - no repeating score in the data.
Illustrative Example
Given the grades of 12 students in Mathematics.
83 78 76 94 81 86
79 77 81 84 81 85

Days Off per Year. The data represent the number of days off
per year from a sample of individuals selected from nine
different countries. 20, 26, 40, 36, 23, 42, 35, 24, 30. Find the
mean.
