    HUMANITIES

    – came from the Latin word “humanus”, it is


    the study of how humans have expressed
    themselves through the arts throughout the
    history.
    - Man is the center of humanities.
    - Refers to the arts
    -branch of learning concerned with
    human thoughts, feelings, and relations.
    humanity
    - The human race considered as a
    whole.
    - Qualities of human being; the
    qualities or characteristics considered
    as a whole to be characteristic of
    human beings.
    The meaning and importance of
    arts
    What is arts?
    - From Italian word “artis” which means
    craftsmen, skill, mastery of form,
    inventiveness and the association that
    exist between form and ideas and
    between material and techniques.
    - Latin words “ars”, meaning ability or
    skills.
    - Art must be man made.
    - Any work that expresses a piece of
    oneself.
    The importance of arts

    1. We can communicate through


    the arts.
    2. Artworks are also valuable sources
    of inspiration, and aesthetic and
    delightful experience.
    3. We get a glimpse of the thoughts,
    feelings, and beliefs of the people
    in their time.
    4. The arts my beautify our humanity.
    Art appreciation
    - Is the ability to interpret or understand
    man-made arts and enjoy them either
    through actual and work-experience
    with art tools and materials or
    possession of these work of art for
    one’s admiration and satisfaction.
    - Therefore: deals with learning or
    understanding and creating arts and
    enjoying them.
    The nature of arts
    1. Art is Timeless
    -people created art at all times. It is old as
    man
    2. Art is not Nature
    - Man, no matter how close it is to nature
    makes art.
    3. Art is always an experience
    - Art is a product of man’s need to express
    himself.
    The subject of art
    -usually anything that is represented in the artwork. It
    may be a person, object, scene or events.

    - The subject of art is varied: Representational arts –


    have subjects

    - Non-representational arts – do not have subjects


    - arts works that have no
    resemblance to any real
    subject.
    The function of arts

    1. AESTHETIC FUNCTION
    - through arts, man becomes
    conscious of the beauty of nature.
    2. UTILITARIAN FUNCTION
    - through art, man is provided with
    shelter, clothing, food, light,
    transportation and other necessities and
    convenience of life.
    3. CULTURAL FUNCTION – through the printed
    matter, transmits and
    preserve skills and
    knowledge from one
    generation to another.

    4. Social Function - International


    understanding and cooperation are fostered.
    The scope of art
    MANOIS:
    1. FINE ARTS OR INDEPENDENT ARTS
    - are made primarily for aesthetic enjoyment
    through the senses, especially visual and auditory.
    example: music, painting, sculpture, architecture
    2. PRACTICAL ARTS
    - Are intended for practical use or utility. It is
    the development for utilitarian materials for
    utilitarian purposes.
    example: industrial art, applied art, commercial
    arts, graphic arts.
    Custodiosa sanchez
    - It is consist of visual arts, literature, drama and
    theatre, music and dance.
    - Visual arts – classified into two groups.
    1. GRAPHIC ARTS – include painting, drawing,
    photography, printing, commercial arts and so
    on
    2. PLASTIC ARTS – includes all fields of visual
    arts for which materials are organized into 3
    dimensional forms.
    example: structural and landscape
    architecture.
