UTS (The Looking Glass Self)
perspective:
The self as a product of
society
Socialization
Process of internalizing the norms and
ideologies of society.
Socialization encompasses both
learning and teaching and is thus
"the means by which social and
cultural continuity are attained".
Charles Horton Cooley
American sociologist
who employed a
sociopsychological approach to
the understanding of society.
In 1902 he introduces the
“looking-glass self”
The looking glass self
Process wherein individuals base their
sense of self on how they believe
others view them.
Social interaction as a type of
“mirror” people use the judgments
they receive from others to measure
their own worth, values, and
behavior.
Three steps:
We try to figure out who we think we
are
We try to understand what other
people think of us
We change based on what we think
society thinks of us
