The Team is subdivided according a. Recovery Room Nurse
to the functions of its members.
b. Student Nurse

The role of the scrubbed nurse
• Responsible for maintaining the integrity, safety, and
the efficiency of the sterile field throughout the surgical
procedure.
• Prepare and arranges instruments and supplies and
facilitates the surgical procedure by providing the
required sterile instruments and supplies. Manual
dexterity and physical stamina are required.
• Anticipates, plan for and respond to the needs of the
surgeon and other team members by constantly
watching the sterile field and progress of the procedure.

• Carry out swab, needle and instrument count
before, during and after the procedure.
• Control the noise in the operating room and be
able to relay messages to and from outside theatre.
• Assist the surgeon in the surgical operation,
providing hemostasis, tying sutures and knots and
applying dressings.
• Assist and teach the learner during the procedure.

• Protect the patient from unnecessary
immodesty or exposure.
• Ensure that the operating table and patient
are secured before the procedure
commences.
•Be knowledgeable and skilled in applying
principles of aseptic and sterile techniques to
ensure infection control.

The role of the circulating nurse
• Being the patient’s advocate and protector.
• Coordinates and monitors some activities within
the OR.
• Creates and maintenance of a safe and
comfortable environment for patient by
implementing principles of asepsis.
• To observe / watch alertly for any break in sterile
technique by others who may not have seen.

• Provision of assistance to any member of the OR
team.
• Ensures that all sterile supplies, instruments and
equipment is available/ obtained quickly for use and
guard against inadvertent hazards in their use and
care.
• Helps the sterile team with swab, needle and
instrument count before, during and after the
operation.
• Tests all equipment before the patient is brought in
the OR.

• Identification of any potential environmental danger or
stressful situation.
• Maintains communication links between events and
team members in the field and persons who are not in
the OR but are concern with the outcome.
• Directs all activities of learners i.e. supervises advices
and teaches.
• Must be Knowledgeable, skilled, and competent to
direct the scrubbed nurse.

The role of the anaesthetist
• Responsible for induction, and maintenance of
anaesthesia. (Providing pain relief to patients and
optimal conditions for surgeons during operations.)
• Monitoring the physiological functions, maintaining
fluid and electrolytes balance and performing
blood replacements if need be.
• Responsible for minimising the hazards of shock,
electrocution and fire.

•Maintenance of a clear airway and breathing
of/for the patient.
•Responsible for overseeing the positioning
and movements of the patients.
•Be able to interpret correctly a wide range of
monitoring devices.
•Oversees patients in Recovery Room until
consciousness has been regained.

• Act as consultants or managers of problems
of acute and chronic respiratory insufficiency,
intravenous therapies, cut downs and helps in
ICU.
• Participates in hospital’s cardiopulmonary
resuscitation as teachers and team members.
• Conduct pre-anaesthetic visits to patients.

The role of the surgeon
• Pre operative diagnosis and care, selection, and
performance of surgical procedures.
• Post operative care of patients.
• Being knowledgeable, skilled and competent to
perform the intended surgical operation and any
deviation necessitated by the unforeseen difficulties.
• Assumes full responsible for all medical acts of
judgment and for the management of the surgical
patient.

The Theatre department works hand in hand with
other departments in the hospital for smooth
running. Some of these departments/services are:
• Radiology
• Physiotherapy
• Pharmacy
• Stores/Supplies
• Laundry
• Laboratory
• Wards
