PEPPER
• The Beatles had grown weary of public performance and there were rumours
they may split up in 1966. They decided to concentrate on ‘studio’ work.
• Sgt. Pepper pushed the boundary of what was possible at the time for recorded
music – it was described as ‘a perfect storm of recording and musical creativity.

It was twenty years ago today It's wonderful to be here,
Sergeant Pepper taught the band to play, It's certainly a thrill
They've been going in and out of style, You're such a lovely audience,
But they're guaranteed to raise the smile, We'd like to take you home with us, we'd love to take you home
So may I introduce to you, I don't really want to stop the show,
The act you've known for all these years, But I thought you might like to know,
Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. That the singer's going to sing a song
We're Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band And he wants you all to sing along,
We hope you will enjoy the show So let me introduce to you

THE ‘CONCEPT ALBUM’
A concept album is, ‘a studio album
where all musical or lyrical ideas
contribute to a single overall theme or
unified story. In contrast, typical studio
albums consist of a number of
unconnected songs (lyrically and
otherwise) performed by the artist. It has
been argued that concept albums should
refer only to albums that bring in themes
or story lines from outside of music, given
that a collection of love songs or songs
from within a certain genre are not
usually considered to be a “concept
album.”
EXTENSION TASK THREE

• Listen to a concept album and write some information about it.

• Artist/band
• Instrumentation/arrangement
• Technology
• Successes and failures
