Objectives
A&D SD Customer
Service & Support
By the end of this foil set you will be able to:
IP Ratings
- Describe how the IP rating is derived.
Protection
- Identify the amount of protection offered by a given IP rating.
Temperature
Requirements
- List typical IP rating for Siemens drives.
Summary

- Describe why temperature of a cabinet affects the efficiency of a drive.

- Describe how a to determine if a cabinet required cooling.

- List measures that can be taken to reduce the heat generated

within
a cabinet installation.

Protection levels EN60529 (IP Ratings)

A&D SD Customer  Protection levels are defined in internationally recognised IP
Service & Support ratings.

IP Ratings  The first number defines the protection levels against objects; the
second number against liquid penetration. The greater the number,
Protection the better the protection.

Temperature
Requirements
 Some approximate definitions:

IP00 - open chassis - no protection

Summary
Typical Drive IP20 - 'finger proof' but no protection against liquid
IP ratings
IP42 - protected from tools, wires etc., drip proof
from above

IP54 - dust entry limited (no damage) splash proof

(rain from all directions)

IP56 - dust as above; wash down (hose) proof

In USA, NEMA ratings are used like NEMA1, 4, 12

Automation and Drives

Protection - Condensation
A&D SD Customer
Service & Support
High levels of humidity or low temperatures will cause
IP Ratings
condensation, which will cause drive failure

Protection Solution:

Temperature Fit anti condensation heaters, or dehumidifiers.

Requirements

Summary
Drives contain high voltages, and are not designed for
water condensation; this applies to IP54/6 units as well!

Make sure the installation is suitable for the drive!

Summary

Dust will reduce cooling and Conductive dust will cause

may cause short circuits failure very quickly.

Many dusts are explosive

(flour,paper).

Make sure the installation is suitable for the drive!

Cooling the MICROMASTER

A&D SD Customer
Service & Support

The maximum operating temperature for most

IP Ratings o o
MICROMASTERs is 50 C (40 C for some units)
Protection
o o
The minimum operating temperature is -10 C; 0 C for some
Temperature units.
Requirements

Summary
This temperature is the worst case temperature inside
the cubicle.

Additional derating is required for altitude, some switching

frequencies and voltages.

Make sure the installation is suitable for the drive!

Getting the temperature correct

A&D SD Customer
Service & Support

Step 1.
IP Ratings

Protection Check the worst case temperature and altitude.

Temperature Derate with altitude (typically 2000m derate to 85%, 3000m

Requirements to 75%)
Summary
Check the installation for other influences (Installation above
o
plastic extruders means a temperature of 45 C - with the
o
factory at 20 C)

Check other deratings such as frequency, voltage etc.

Automation and Drives

Getting the temperature correct

A&D SD Customer Step 2.
Service & Support
Using the heat loss information for the drive, and
IP Ratings other equipment in the cubicle, calculate the
temperature rise inside the cubicle and add this to the
Protection temperature outside. (see handbook) If this exceeds
o
Temperature 50 C:
Requirements
Choose a bigger cubicle
Summary Consider fan cooling (With filter and maintenance
schedule)
Consider heat exchanger

Step 3

On installation, check there are no unexpected

changes ( more equipment in cubicle etc.) and that
the air is not blocked by cable channels etc.

For low temperature applications, consider heating

systems

Automation and Drives

Cooling Requirements
A&D SD Customer
Service & Support
1. Calculate total heat loss (Ploss) cabinet. Use manufacturers data or
IP Ratings assume 3% loss.

Protection 2. For a sealed cabinet, calculate temperature rise using the formula:

Temperature Trise = Ploss/(5.5 x A)

Requirements
Where A is the total exposed area of the cabinet in square metres.
Summary
For a fan cooled cabinet:

Trise = (0.053 x Ploss)/F

Where F is the air flow in cubic metres /minute.

3. Add the Temperature rise to the external ambient temperature. If this

is greater than the operating temperature of the drive, additional
cooling will be needed, or the units must be de-rated.
