”Hotel des Boobs” a metafictional writing
What is metafiction? „It is fictional writing which self-consciously and systematically draws attention to its
status as an artefact in order to pose questions about the relationship between fiction and reality. In providing
a critique of their own methods of construction, such writings not only examine the fundamental structures of
narrative fiction, they also explore the possible fictionality of the world outside the literary fictional
text.”(Patricia Waugh ).

BUT…
What represents metafiction in ”Hotel de Boobs”? In ”Hotel de Boobs” metafiction it’s like a mirror, because
when you start reading the short story, you feel like you’re plunging in to an Universe of fiction, that feels
real, it’s an criticism addressed to the reader, when you imagine reality in to a fiction.

Some of characteristics of the metafiction present in the short story:

 Creating backgrounds of imaginary characters;
 Surrogate author;
 Artificiality of the story (relation between fiction and reality)
 Self reflexivity;
 Self-reflexivity
SIMBOLS OF SEPARETION:
The book „A book was certainly basic equipment for discreet boob-watching down by
the pool: something to peer over, or round, something to look up from, as if distracted by
a sudden noise or movement, at the opportune moment, just as the bird a few yards away
slipped her costume off her shoulders, or rolled on to her back.” for Harry is a tool for
hiding his intention of peeping women`s breasts.
The title ”Hotel de Boobs” reflex the content of the text.
The sunglasses „Another essential item was a pair of sunglass, as dark as possible, to
conceal the precise direction of one’s gaze.”, are hiding the author, that’s a metafictional
statement, I don’t want for you, the reader, to see the author because I don’t want you to
be obsess with the author, I want you to work with the text, not the author.
Windows, curtains appear as symbol of separation, he hide like the ”Peeping Tom”.
About the short story..
The two half of the short story are mirror imagines, are similar but not identical because they
belong to two different dimension both are fictionary because are literary text, but one is actual
and the other additionally/imaginary:

Loss of the manuscript
„It made the pine trees in the hotel grounds shiver and hiss, raised wavelets on the surface of the pool, knocked over several umbrellas,
and whirled the leaves of the author’s manuscript into the air.”

• Is the central incident of the short story, it’s a break, a analyze about
his work, because someone as a child can find it and read it, and
maybe they do not understand at all.
• The fear that the author feels has to do with the high probability of the
readers recognize themselves in fiction.
• Also has to do with the uneducated reader whom do not expects events
chronological and logic to be reshuffled, so the children bring the
pieces of paper back without having them coherent overall picture of
all story.
Symbolism of the breasts
-in terms of metafiction-
• sexuality
• fertility
• creativity
• procreation
• motherhood
• the growth of the next generation

The cultural proof for the obsession with breasts it is in using of this many terms as: boobs, tits,
breasts, pins, bristols, knockers, bust in more elegant or offensive terms.
In the short story, the woman is transformed into an object characterised by the shape or size
of their breasts.
In conclusion ,”Hotel des
Boobs” is a writting that
provokes your thinking
through the amazing way
of structuring and
symbols that makes the
story even more attractive
to
the reader.
