The Lasso Tool
Use to make a freeform
selection by dragging the
mouse around the area of the
image to be selected.
It is represented by the
icon in the tools palette.
The Magnetic Lasso Tool
Use to quickly select objects or an area in the image
which has contrasting edges.
It automatically selects the edges by snapping the
selection border to the edges of the object or the area
in the image being selected.
It base the selection on the edge’s color contrast.
It is ideal to use in selecting an object or an area in the
image with contrasting edges and background color.
It is represented by the icon in the tools palette.
Activating Lasso or
Magnetic Lasso Tool
Select the Lasso tool icon
or the Magnetic lasso
tool in the tools palette.
Alternatively you can
press the [Shift]+[L]
shortcut key until the
lasso tool or magnetic
lasso tool is selected.
Lasso Tool
Using the Lasso Tool
1. Select the lasso tool in the tools palette.
2. Select the New Selection option from the
tool option bar.
3. Click and drag the mouse on the area of
the image that you like to select.
4. Release the left mouse button if you have
already selected the area. You will notice a
blinking border around the selected area,
which indicates that you have made a
selection.
Using the Lasso Tool
5. (Optional) You can select the Add to selection
or Subtract from selection option in the tool
option bar to add or subtract a selection.
Alternatively you can press the [Shift] key to
add a selection or the [Alt] ([Option] key on
Mac) key to subtract a selection.
6. (Optionally) You can click the Refine Edge
button in the tool option bar to activate the
Refine Edge dialog box, which offers more
options such as contract/expand, feather, and
contrast.
Using the Magnetic
Lasso Tool
1. Select the magnetic lasso tool in the tools palette.
2. Choose the selection option in the tool option bar
(New selection, Add to selection, Subtract from
selection, or Intersect with selection).
3. (Optional) Set the following magnetic lasso tool
options:
– Width: It specifies the detection width in pixels.
– Contrast: It specifies the contrast value in order for the
magnetic lasso tool to adjust its sensitivity in detecting
edges.
– Frequency: It specifies the rate of setting the fastening
points.

4. Click on the area of the image where you want
to set the first fastening point.
5. Move the mouse pointer along the edge that
you want to select.
6. Continue moving your mouse pointer along
the edges and add fastening points as needed
until you return to the first fastening point.
7. Close the selection by clicking the first
fastening point.
