CLASSIFICATION:
A hotel can be classified into several categories according to
several demands. Some of them are mentioned below:
On the basis of size:
HOTEL SMALL
Hotels with 25 rooms or less.
Example: the Oberoi, Vanyavillas (25 rooms).
A hotel is a business
organization or household, MEDIUM
providing Hotels with 26-100 rooms.

On the basis of location.
Down Town Hotel
A downtown hotel is located in the centre of the city or within a short distance
from the business centre, shopping area, theatres, public offices etc. Eg- Hotel
Olive Downtown, Kochi.
Sub-urban Hotel
Hotels that are located away from the hurry up and bustle of city is known as sun-
urban hotel. The duration of guest stay may be longer than the down town hotels.
Eg- The Oberoi Cecil, Shimla.
HOTEL Airport Hotel
Hotels that are located in the close vicinity of air ports with all the facilities of a
commercial hotel is known as airport hotels. Eg- Hilton International Mumbai.
Resort
Hotels that are located at tourist destinations such as hill stations, sea beaches and
countryside with a calm and natural ambience are referred to as resort hotels.. Eg-
Kumarakom Lake Resort, Kerela.
Motel
Hotel that is located along the highways and provides modest lodgings to highway
travellers is known as motels. Eg-Xomotel Sunita Himalayan Paradise,Kausani
Flotels
Flotels or floating hotels are types of lodging properties that float on the surface of
water. Some of the Flotels offers luxuries accommodation with food and beverage
facilities to guest. Eg- Floates, Kolkata.
On the basis of stars:
1 STAR
Smaller hotels managed by proprietors.
Minimum size of bedroom excluding bathroom should be 120sq. ft.
The hotels should have at least 10 lettable bedrooms with attached bathroom of
minimum 30sq. ft. size.
Minimum one dining room with no mandatory room service.
25% of the bathroom should have western style WCs.
2 STAR
HOTEL Minimum size of bedroom excluding bathroom should be 120sq. ft.
Should have at least 10 lettable rooms with at least 75% should attached
bathrooms with showers of minimum 30sq. ft. size.
At least 25 % of the rooms should be air conditioned.
25% of the bathroom should have western style WCs.
3 STAR
Minimum size of bedroom excluding bathroom should be 130sq. ft.
Should have at least 20 lettable rooms with attached bathrooms of minimum
36sq. ft. size.
The hotels should have bedrooms with attached bathroom
At least 50 % of the rooms should be air conditioned.
One Multi-cuisine Restaurant cum coffee shop open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. and
24 hr. room service.
On the basis of stars:

Façade, Architectural features and general construction of the hotel building
should have distinctive qualities.
Should have at least 25 lettable rooms with attached bathrooms of minimum
36sq. ft. Size with long baths or most modern shower chamber.
Minimum size of bedroom excluding bathroom should be 140sq. Ft.
HOTEL Fully air conditioned rooms.
5 STAR
Façade, Architectural features and general construction of the hotel building
should have distinctive qualities.
Should have at least 25 lettable rooms with attached bathrooms of minimum
45sq. ft. size with long baths or most modern shower chamber.
