SPHERICAL MIRRORS

&
MIRROR FORMULA
• Concave mirrors are commonly used in
torches, search-lights and vehicles
headlights to get powerful parallel beams
of light.
• They are often used as shaving mirrors
to see a larger image of the face.
• The dentists use concave mirrors to see
large images of the teeth of patients.
• Large concave mirrors are used to
concentrate sunlight to produce heat in
solar furnaces.

• Convex mirrors are commonly used as rear-
view (wing) mirrors in vehicles. These
mirror enables the driver to see traffic
behind him/her to facilitate safe driving.
• Convex mirrors are preferred because they
always give an erect, though diminished,
image.
• Also, they have a wider field of view as
they are curved outwards. Thus, convex
mirrors enable the driver to view much
larger area than would be possible with a
plane mirror.

1.The object is on the left of the mirror,ie.,light is
incident on the mirror from the left hand side of the
mirror.
All distances parallel to the
principal axis are measured from
the pole of the spherical mirror.

POLE
The height measured upwards
and perpendicular to the principal
axis is taken as positive. The
height measured downwards and
perpendicular to the principal
axis is taken as negative.

ho-ive
The distances measured in the
direction opposite to the incident
light (left) are taken as negative.

2F F
The distances measured in the
direction of the incident light
(right) are taken as positive.

Question
An object of height 5cm is placed in
front of a concave mirror of focal length
10cm,at a distance of 15cm. Find the
position and nature of the image. (Apply
sign convention and find the sign of all
the quantities)
Mirror formula
1/f=1/v+1/u
Solution
OBJECT

2F F
By applying sign convention POLE
IMAGE
u= -15cm, F= -10cm ho= +5cm V=?

1/f=1/u+1/v
1/-10=1/-15 +1/v

1/-10+1/15 =1/v
(-3+2)/30=1/v

V= -30cm

M =-v/u =-(-30/-15)= -2
Nature
enlarged,inverted and real.

Position
Image is formed at a distance of 30cm in
front of the mirror
