BAILEY BRIDGE
• The Bailey Bridge is-
• Type of portable,pre-fabricated,truss bridge.
• Developed by the British during World War II
for military uas.
• Extensively use by both British and the
American military engineering units.
HISTORY of BAILEY BRIDGE
• Whilst working in the British War Office during World War II, civil servant
Donald Bailey had an idea for a radical new bridge.
• His design for a modular,light but strong and very versatile bridge system
provide to be one of the greatest invention of World WarII and was
destined to significant part in the allied victory.
• Having presented the idea to his superiors,the ninovative design was
successfully developed and tested by the British Government.
• The subsequently named Bailey Bridge was adopted as the standard
Military Bridge in 1941 and was used extensively throughout the
European campaign.
• By 1947 ,some 2000 Bailey Bridges had been built with more than 1500
bridges being constructed in North West Europe alone.

• Sir Donald Coleman Bailey was
born in Rotherham,in
Yorkshire,England.
• After graduating as engineer from
the University of Shieffield he
work in the railway industry
before joining the Ministry of
Supply's Experimental Bridging
Establishment in 1929.
• By the time World War II had
broken out in 1939 he had
already developed an idea for a
Military Bridge.
