MUSIC OF THAILAND
THAILAND
 Situated at the heart of Southeast Asia
 Kingdom of Thailand formerly known as Siam
 It is surrounded by Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, and the Gulf of
Siam.
 Ruled by a king who is also referred to as the Head of the Armed Forces
and the Head of State. He is also named Protector of Buddhism.
 Buddhism is the major religion of the land practiced by more than 90% of
the population.
Thai Music
 Reveals Thailand’s interaction with Africa, Europe (Rome and Greece),
and Asia (Iran, Indonesia, India, and China)
 The influences are evident in the Thai musical systems, instruments, styles,
and forms
 The classical music of Thailand is basically polyphonic, having two or
more melodic lines heard simultaneously.
 Characterized by steady tempo, standard pulse, and duple meter.
 Uses either pentatonic (five-tone) or heptatonic (seven-tone) scale.
 Follows similar principles of folk music and jazz music of Americans.
 Traditional songs are passed on to the next generations through oral
tradition.

clappers, cymbals, shaken bamboo, and

INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLE OF
THAILAND
 PIPHAT
-a kind of instrumental ensemble used in classical music of Thailand.
 KHRUEANG SAI
-literally means string ensemble.
 MAHORI
-a classical instrumental ensemble of Thailand that combines the
instruments from khrueang sai and piphat except the aerophone pi.
MUSIC OF CAMBODIA
CAMODIA
- also known as Kampuchea, is a Southeast Asian country located in the
southern part of the Indochina Peninsula.
- rich heritage of art and culture.

 Cambodian music stemmed from the traditions of the Khmer Empire as


well as the influences from the Western musical traditions as shown in
their popular and contemporary music.
Cambodian classical music includes:
 Phleng kar
- the songs used in wedding ceremonies.
 Pin peat
- the court music used in their ceremonies. This has nine to twelve different
instruments.
 Mahori
- the secular music used for entertainment.

- a dance music with slow tempo.
2) Ramkbach
- a Cambodian modern music that is related to the folk music of Thailand.
