Hold Your Throat and Say

This module aims to teach learners about waves as energy carriers. A demonstration activity is described where shouting into a can with a balloon stretched over one end and salt on top causes the salt to move due to vibrations from the vocal cords being transferred through the air to the balloon. There are two types of vibration explained: free vibration which occurs without an external force, and forced vibration which requires an alternating external force. Waves transfer energy from one object or particle to another through a medium like solids, liquids, or gases without transferring matter itself.

Unit 3- Module 2

Grade 7- Amethyst
December 4, 2018
At the end of this module:

Learners must demonstrate an understanding of waves as energy carriers.

Hold your
throat and say
“ah”
VIBRATIONS

• shaking or quivering
• quick moving back and forth (or up and down) about a
point of equilibrium (balance)
• vibration may be periodic (having a pattern) or random
Demonstration Activity: Vibrations
Procedure:
1. Cut a balloon and stretch it over one end of the can.
2. Put the can and its balloon end up on the arm of your chair.
3. Put a small amount of salt on top of the balloon.
4. Ask one member of the group to shout (not blow) at the can.
5. Observe what happens to the salt. Place your fingers lightly on your
throat while creating the sound.

Let's answer the guide questions (Write your answers on the

metacards)
Guide Questions:
1. What two things are vibrating?
rubber balloon
vocal chords in the throat

2. What caused the salt to move?

The salt is moved by the balloon's vibration
• The repetitive motion that you do
with your hand while waving is
called a vibration

causes wave when you observe a

motion wave, the source is
always vibration
Types of Vibration
• Free vibration occurs when vibration is set off with a push and allowed to
vibrate freely.
Examples: pulling a child back on a swing and then letting go
hitting a tuning fork and letting it ring.

• Forced vibration is when an alternating force or motion is applied to a

mechanical system.

Examples of this type of vibration include:

a shaking washing machine due to an imbalance.
transportation vibration (caused by a combination of truck engine, springs,
road).
vibration of a building during an earthquake.

Energy can be transferred from object to object or from particle to

particle through a medium which can be a solid, liquid or gas. Waves
carry or transfer energy.

In a wave motion, energy is transferred without transferring the

matter
