The purpose of this chapter is to show the


impacts that corruption has on the
economic and political development.
WHAT IS ECONOMIC
DEVELOPMENT?
• Development of economic wealth of
countries, regions, or communities for
the well-being of their inhabitants
• Efforts that seek to improve the
economic well-being and quality of life
WHAT IS POLITICAL
DEVELOPMENT?
• more elusive concept than economic
development

• Deepening of values
within a state that are held in whatever
political ideology at play
WHAT IS CORRUPTION?

• Form of dishonesty or criminal


activity undertaken by a person or
organization entrusted with a
position of authority, often to
acquire illicit benefit.
EFFECTS OF CORRUPTION
1. Affects the human capital
formation, which is the most
important input in the process of
production and transformation that
is called
“Economic Development”

2. Weakens tax administration and can
lead to tax evasion and improper
tax exemptions
(The higher the level of corruption,
the lower the revenue, and the lower
the resources available for funding
public provision of certain service)

government thus reduces the resources
available for other uses including:
