Application of universal motor
Introduction :-

 The motor which can be operated

satisfactorily on A.C. as well as D.C.
supply is Universal motor.
 Mainly it is A.C. series motor.
They are small fractional HP motor.
Windings of universal motor:-

There are three types of winding used,

namely armature, main field and
compensating winding.
Out of which the compensating winding
is used only for the compensated
universal motor.
All the windings are connected in series
with each other since this is basically a
series motor.
Types of universal motor :-

Universal motor are of two types

namely:
1. Uncompensated type universal
motors.
2. Compensated type universal
motors.
1.Uncompensated type
universal motors:-

•The construction of uncompensated universal motor is

shown in fig.(a) and torque speed characteristics is
shown in fig.(b)

(a)construction
(b) Torque speed chara.
•Field winding produces flux. It is a stationary winding.
Armature is a rotary winding.
•Operating principle is same as that of dc motor.
• These motor produce a high starting torque but their speed
decreases with increase in load. Their speed regulation is not very
good.
•The torque speed characteristics of uncompensated universal
motor differ a lot for DC and AC supply chara.
•In non compensated type motor the capacity is low. Normally it
is designed for two pole structure.
•Pole and pole shoe both are laminated to reduce eddy current
losses.
•Armature is similar to D.C. motor armature.
2. Compensated type
universal motors:-
•In compensated type motor main field winding and
compensating winding are distributed over entire
stator.
•Armature is similar to D.C. motor armature.
•Fig.(c)shows the schematic diagram for the
compensated type universal motor and fig.(d) shows
its speed torque characteristics.
•The motor chara. Can be modified as per
requirement with the help of the compensating
winding .

Fig.(d)
•It is seen that speed torque chara. on
d.c.anda.c. supply almost coincide.
•Hence this type of motor is better suited even
for higher speed.
•Compensated motor are more expensive due to
complicated construction. Hence they are
preferred for higher capacity loads.
Advantages of universal motor :-

1. Simple Construction.
2. Low Cost .
3. They can be operated on DC as well AC supply.
4. High starting torque.

DisAdvantages of universal motor :-

1. Poor speed regulation.

2. They are fractional H.P. motor.
Speed range and Direction reversal :-
•The full load operating speed of universal motor range
between 3000to20,000 rpm.
•Sometimes they are provided with the in built speed
reduction gears for low speed application.
• the direction reversal is achieved by reversing the
connections to either the armature or field winding.

Application of universal motor:-

Universal motor are used mainly in domestic

application with fractional HP capacity rating.
Typical applications are:-
1. Washing machines
2. Food processors.
3. Mixers and grinders.
4. Small drilling machine.
