Proposals for DC-DC Converter topology
• The input voltage to the IC from the vehicle battery varies from 8V to 16V .
• The selection of the converter topology should be done based upon the required power output.
Proposal-1: For output voltage more than the input voltage range, i.e. more than 16V, Boost topology
should be chosen.
Proposal-2: When required output voltage is higher or within the input voltage range, Buck-boost
topology may be chosen .

Required circuit specifications and IC selection
The required circuit features :
.

•Power output = 10W to 20W

•LED forward voltage = 3V to 3.5V
IC selection and Characteristics:
Selected LED Driver IC: TPS61194-Q1
•Manufacturer: Texas Instruments
•Maximum output voltage per string = 45V
•Maximum output current per string = 0.1 A
•Number of channels = 4
•IC can detect string to ground short but not single LED short in a string.
•Input voltage range = 8V to 16V
Considering the above mentioned factors the following choices were made:
1.LED (STW8B12C) was chosen with current 0.1A & Vf = 3.2V
2.12 LEDs were connected to each channel in series. Thus, output voltage required = 38.4V.
3.As the required output voltage was more than the max. input voltage, the IC was used in boost mode.

Circuit component calculations
• Selection of R_fset: fsw = 600kHz
Thus, R_fset = 105 kohm

Iout = 100mA
• Selection of R_iset: Thus, Riset = 24.3 kohm

Assuming 25% ripple current

• Selection of Inductor: L = 258 µF

• Selection of C_out & C_in: Values taken in the typical range as given in the datasheet.
• Selection of Diode: Schottky diode

Short circuit detection simulation results

Single LED short in any string: Proper functioning of all the components:
Voltage Input to the fault pin = 3.5 V Voltage input to the fault pin = 0.05 V
Circuit output
• Output power at each LED string = (0.1 A)*(38.4 V) = 3.84 W
• Total output power = 4*3.84 W = 15.36 W
• Lumen output rating for each LED used in the design = 117 lm/W
• Total lumen output of the design = 1797.12 lm

• The required lumen output can be obtained by using lesser or more number of LEDs in the
design.

• Max. number of LEDs that can be used in a string = 15

• Max. output power from the design = 4*(0.1 A)*(48 V) = 19.2 W
• Max lumen output = 2246.4 lm
