Is the communication outlets or tools used to store and
deliver information or data. The term refers to
components of the mass media communications industry,
such as print media, publishing, the news media,
photography, cinema, broadcasting, digital media, and
advertising.

They are so intertwined that information
is one of the reasons why communication is
done in the first place; and this
information can be shared through media.
MEDIA MODALITY
It refers to the nature of message, whether it is
relayed using text, audio, video, graphics,
animation, or a combination of any of these things.
MEDIA
FORMAT
•It refers to the way the data are arranged.
•The data or message may be transmitted through
radio waves (for audio) and light waves for other
modalities.
MASS MEDIA
FORM
•Itrefers to the particular media technology to
which the message is transmitted.
The UNESCO Media and Information
Literacy
• UNESCO defines MIL as the essential competencies
(knowledge, skills, and attitudes) that allow citizens to
engage with media and other information providers
effectively, and develop critical thinking and life-long
learning skills for socializing and becoming active
citizens.
• MIL is concerned with the process of understanding
and using media and other information providers, as
well as information and communication technologies.
LITERACY
• United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization
(UNESCO) defined literacy as the “ability to identify, understand,
interpret, create, communicate, and compute using printed & written
materials associated with varying contexts.” and Equivalent to a skill.
• It also the ability to effectively and efficiently comprehend and use
written symbols.
MEDIA LITERACY
•The ability to read ,analyze, evaluate and produce
communication in a variety of media forms e.g.
television, print, radio, computers, etc.

•Refers to LITERACY
the ability to recognize when
information is needed and to locate, evaluate,
effectively use and communicate information in its
various formats.
COMPONENTS
An information literate person
should be able to:
1.Identify information needs and determine the
extent of information needed. Clearly and
concisely define the question to be answered, and
realize that the question may evolve.
2.Locate and retrieve appropriate sources of information.
• Understand the structure of information: how is it produced, disseminated,
organized, cataloged, stored, and retrieved, and how these factors vary by
discipline. For example, how do scholars or professionals keep up to date in and
contribute to their field.
• Use indexes and other search tools effectively and efficiently to find specific
resources (e.g., select appropriate tools, formulate search strategies, use
appropriate search techniques, evaluate results)
3.Evaluate information and its sources critically.
a. Understand different types of sources and formats, and how to use
them.
b. Evaluate the relevance and reliability of the information retrieved.
4.Synthesize the information retrieved, integrate it
into one's current knowledge base, and successfully
apply it to the original information need.
5.Present this newly acquired knowledge so that others can
use it.
a. Determine the audience's needs and the best presentation format; know the
standards and criteria for presenting information in the relevant
subject/field/discipline.
b. Properly cite sources: direct the audience to sources of further information and
acknowledge one's sources.
6. Translate these abilities and concepts
to new projects and disciplines.

•This is the ability

evaluate, use and create information.
•It also refers to the ability to understand and use
information in multiple formats from a wide
range of sources when it is presented via
computers.
• Media and Information Literacy is considered as a
lifelong skill and practice, thus an individual needs to
adapt in it to make informed decisions. Becoming
literate is your fundamental human right. You are able
to express yourself in a way that may improve your life.
