Introduction
Water is a vital natural resource which forms the basis of all
life.
It is one of the marvelous gift to us.
About 70% of the human body is water.
The bodies of all plants and animals contain water.
It has be estimated that the total water contained on earth is
about 1385.5×10^6.
About water
97% of the water on the Earth is salt water. However, only 3%
percent is fresh water; slightly over 2/3 of this is frozen in
glaciers and polar ice caps.
The remaining unfrozen freshwater is found mainly as
groundwater, with only a small fraction present above ground
or in the air.
On the surface of earth 71% is covered by seas and oceans and
remaining 29% is occupied by land.
Fresh water is a renewable resource.

1. Surface water
- Surface sources are also known as Ground sources.
- Water can be easily stored naturally or artificially on the earth surface.
- Surface sources include Streams, rivers, lake, pounds, Artificial Reservoir
etc.
A.Streams
- In mountainous region, during rainy season water from to mountain
gets collected and flow in the form of steam.
B. Rivers
-Number of small stream flowing over from the mountainous combine together
to from a river.
- River is the only surface source of water which can be easily available in
abundance and can be easily used.
C. Lakes
- In mountains at some place, natural basin are formed with impervious bed of water
from stream generally moves to word these reasons to form a lake .
- it is suitable for industrial use
D. Ponds
- Pondsare depression in plains in which water is collected during rainy seoson
- Pounds are mostly formed in small village.
E. Natural and artificial reservoir
- Reservoir has large capacity to store water which is utilized by the
people in deficient period.
2) Sub- surface sources ( Under Ground water
sources )
- A portion of rainfall in filtrate the ground and get stored as sub sub surface
water at hard stratum.
A. Springs
- Some times When the ground water is very high the water comes out on the
surface in the form of springs.
- There are two type of spring
1) Gravity Springs
2) Artesian Springs
1) Gravity Springs
- In this case the under water level rises and water out flows through the sides of
natural Valley or a Depression.
2) Artesian Springs
- These are spring which water flow automatically under pressure this water can
be stored in water tank.
B. Infiltration Gallery's
- Generally ground water flows to word pound or lakes
- In this water can be intercepted by digging cannel or tunnel with hales at right
angle this underground tunnel are colled as infiltration galleries.
C. Open wells
- Vertical hole dug or drilled under ground to triap the sub soil water is
called as well.
D. Infiltration Well
- The shallow wells constructed under bed of river are called as Infiltration
wells
E. Tube wells
A tube well is a type of water well in which a long, 100–200 millimetres (3.9–7.9 in)-
wide, stainless steel tube or pipe is bored into an underground aquifer. The lower end
is fitted with a strainer, and a pump lifts water for irrigation.
