1. Identify the sewing tools and the equipment needed for
each of the processes of sewing.
2. Give the uses of the sewing tools and the equipment.
3. Classify each tool and equipment according to their use
or function.
Sewing Tools and Equipment

■Sewing Tools - instruments that aid in


accomplishing a sewing task. It can be
manipulated by hands.
■Sewing Equipment - those are the more
complicated tool, it provides to carry out a
particular process or function.

MEASURING TOOLS
- denoting an instrument or device used to
ascertain the size, length, distance, amount, or
degree of something.

1. Tape measure
2. Sewing gauge

4. Yardstick or Meterstick
5. L- square or Tailor’s square
1. TAPE MEASURE
- a flexible measuring device used in
taking body measurements.
2. SEWING GAUGE
-a small ruler with a sliding guide and is
about six inches long. This gauge is
used for measurements at hem lines,
button holes and areas where other
small measurements require checking.
3. RULER
-a ruler measuring 12 inches or even 18
inches, either clear or solid. It is a useful
tool to have for measuring and drawing
straight seam lines and cutting lines. It
also aids in connecting lines.
4. YARDSTICK OR
METERSTICK
-a yardstick is made of smooth,
shellacked hardwood or metal. It is
used for marking hemlines and checking
grain lines when laying out the pattern.
5. L-SQUARE OR
TAILOR’S SQUARE
- is used to transfer measurements to the
draft pattern and make perpendicular lines. It
also divides the garment into the desired
measurement. It has perfect squares and is
useful in making straight lines and numbers.
DRAFTING TOOLS
-tools used for measurement and layout of
drawings or drafted pattern.

1. FRENCH CURVE
-This is used to shape the depth of the
neck hole and armhole of the pattern.
2. HIP CURVE
-aids in pattern making by providing an
elongated, curved edge for smoothing and
correcting pattern lines. It is used in shaping hips
and hemlines.
3. L-SQUARE OR
TAILOR’S SQUARE
- is used to transfer measurements to the
draft pattern and make perpendicular lines. It
also divides the garment into the desired
measurement. It has perfect squares and is
useful in making straight lines and numbers.
CUTTING TOOLS
- is used to remove some material from the work
piece by means of sharp object.

DRESSMAKER’S
SHEARS
- These are made of quality steel and hold a
sharp cutting edge. The blades move easily
and cut smoothly along the entire length and
the points should come together.
2. PINKING SHEARS
- This is popular in zigzagging or scalloped
edge or for seam finishes. This is used to
finish seams and raw edges and to create
decorative edges on many types of fabric. It
cuts a ravel- resistant edge.
3. CUTTING SCISSORS
a.Trimming scissors/ trimmer - It is used
for trimmings, clipping threads and
snipping slashes.

finely tapered blades. Both points are sharp
for use in working with fine details in delicate
fabrics and in embroidery work.

-specifically designed for ripping out stitches
from seams, either as a result of an error or
during alterations.

1. SEWING MACHINE
-is a machine used to sew fabric and
materials together with thread.
2. NEEDLE
-a small, slender, rodlike instrument, usually
of polished steel, with a sharp point at one
end and an eye or hole for thread at the
other, for passing thread through cloth to
make stitches in sewing.

a. Hand Needle- Needles uses when
sewing by hand.

machine requires a certain needle. Make
sure you have the right needle for your
machine

-along, thin strand of cotton, nylon,
or other fibers used in sewing or
weaving.

-a thin piece of metal with a sharp point at
one end and a round head at the other,
used especially for fastening or holding
pieces of cloth while cutting and sewing.
5. PIN CUSHION
-used in sewing to store pins or needles
with their heads protruding to take hold of
them easily, collect them, and keep them
organized.
6. EMERY BAG
-used to sharpen pin and needles.
7. THIMBLE
-a metal or plastic cap with a closed end,
worn to protect the finger and push the
needle in sewing.
8. NEEDLE THREADER
-is a device for helping to put thread
through the eye of a needle.
