Review on the filament winding process

 1)Winding Methods

 2)Winding Pattern
Winding Methods

 Wet winding
1.1)Drum bath: Drum bath provide
less fiber damage than dip bath
2)Enhancement
 Lowering resin viscosity
 Reducing fiber speed
 Increasing fiber path
 Heated bath
3)Used for Carbon fiber
Winding Methods

1.2) Dip Bath

 Dip bath is better wetting action than Drum
bath.
 Used with aramid or glass fiber
 Preferred if heated resin
Prepreg Winding

 Pre-impregnated tows are placed

 Excellent quality control and reproducibility
 Better resin control
 Consistent composite
 Less fiber damage

 Higher cost and without room temperatures

Selection of the proper process

 Wet Winding is chosen

 Prepreg technology will be costly

 It requires temperature lower than room temperature

Winding Pattern

 Circumferential

 Helical

 Polar winding
Circumferential Winding

 Special winding angle 90 degree

 Full width movement of carriage

Helical Winding

 Mandrel rotates at constant speed

 Carriage movement

 Winding angle must be taken into consideration

Polar Winding

 Polar position by the fibers

 Rotation of mandrel arm

 High degree of freedom required

Selection of the winding pattern

 Helical Winding (for pipe application)

 Parameters for winding pattern

 Winding angle
 Radius of the mandrel
 Bandwidth of the tow

 CADWIND Software

 G-Code imported to controller

Design of different part

 Rotary unit

 Carriage unit

 Ring pay-out eye

Rotary Unit

 Consists of two blocks

 Transmission system

 Stainless steel (bending)

 Rubber ring for vibration

Carriage unit

 Tensioner

 Composite fibers creels

 Resin Bath

 Two guide bars &comb device

Tensioner

 Control tension force

 Winding angle at high angles

 Control volumetric ratio of composite

Ring payout eye

 Additional part to guide fibers

 Fixed on carriage unit

 Control of bandwidth

 Good for high winding angle

Control Unit

 CADWIND generate G-code

 Arduino-Uno and CNC V1 shield main controller

 Voltage regulator (220V to 35V)

 DC brushless fan ,stepper motor& limit switch

Conclusion

Selection:
Winding Pattern
Controller
Challenges:
Parameters of tow
Full Design of each component
