Lesson 2: Mean, Variance and Standard Deviation of
the Sampling Distribution of the sample mean

Del Rosario, Jennie Joy A.

PROPERTIES OF THE SAMPLING DISTRIBUTION OF SAMPLE MEANS
1. The mean of the population μ, is also the mean of the sample μx
taken from the population. Therefore μx = μ.

μx = Σ[x̄ • P(x)̄ ]
2. The variance of the sampling distribution of the sample means σ is
given by:   σ2 x̄ = Σ[P(x̄) • (x̄ - μ)2]  or  Σ[x̄2 • P(x̄)] - μ2  or
σ2 x̄ = σ2 • N - n   for finite population (without replacement); and

n     N - 1
σ2 x̄ = σ2   for infinite population (with replacement)

n
3. The standard deviation of the sampling distribution of the sample mean is
given by:

σ2 x̄ = σ2 • √ N - n  for finite population where

√n       N - 1
√N - n  for finite population correction factor
  N - 1

σ2 x̄ = σ2  for infinite population

STEPS IN CONSTRUCTING THE SAMPLING
  DISTRIBUTION OF THE SAMPLE MEANS

1. Compute the population means.

2. Compute the population variance.
3. Determine the number of possible samples.

5. Construct the sampling distribution of the sample means.
6. Compute the mean of the sampling distribution of the sample means.t
7. Compute the variance of the sampling distribution of the sample means.
8. Construct the histogram.
EXAMPLE.
A population consist of the numbers 2, 4, 9, 10, and 5. Let us list all the
possible sample size of 3 from this population and compute the mean and
variance of the sampling distribution of the sample means.
1. Compute the population mean.
μ =  Σ X      =  2 + 4 + 9 + 10 + 5  =  30  = 6
        N                   5       5
2. Compute the population variance.

σ2 = Σ(X – μ)2   =   (2 – 6)2 + (4 – 6)2 + (9 – 6)2 + (10 – 6)2 + (5 – 6)2

             N                                          5    σ2  =   9.2
EXAMPLE.
A population consist of the numbers 2, 4, 9, 10, and 5. Let us list all the possible sample size of 3 from this
population and compute the mean and variance of the sampling distribution of the sample means.

3. Determine the number of possible samples. N – population size

n– sample size

C = N!
N n N = 5      n = 3
     n!(N-n)!

C = N!        =        5!          =  5 • 4 • 3!    =  5 • 4   = 20   = 10

N n
     n!(N-n)!        3!(5!-3)!            3!2!             2 • 1       2

There are 10 possible samples of size 3 that can be drawn from the given data.
