Ammonia Plants Worldwide
What is Ammonia
Ammonia (NH3) is a chemical compound that is made of molecules
containing three hydrogen atoms and one nitrogen atom,
and, like hydrogen, it releases no carbon dioxide when
burned in a thermal power plant.
Blue Ammonia
Blue ammonia is a new potential source of energy that is created from byproducts of
current fossil fuel production.
Blue ammonia is used as feed stock to make blue hydrogen. Blue hydrogen is
hydrogen made from fossil fuels through a process that captures and store the CO2
produced rather than released it into the atmosphere.
The use of ammonia could help in developing cleaner, affordable and more
sustainable energy.

In the emerging ammonia economy, blue ammonia is considered a first-
generation fuel and green ammonia is considered second-generation.
Green ammonia production is where the process of making ammonia is
100% renewable and carbon free.
1-Blue Ammonia Plants Worldwide:
Saudi Arabia blue ammonia to Japan: Blue ammonia’s role in the energy
transition of Saudi Arabia and Japan. The world's first shipment of blue
ammonia was dispatched from Saudi Arabia to Japan on Sep27, 2020 for
use in a power station for the production of zero-carbon power generation,
paving the way for the further use of hydrogen in the energy system.
The Saudi-Japanese collaboration is part of a pilot project by the Institute of
Energy Economics, Japan (IEEJ) and oil company Saudi Aramco in partnership
with Saudi Basic Industries. The first shipment contains 40 metric tons of blue
ammonia.
Background:
In the Paris climate deal (2016), Japan has pledged to reduce its
greenhouse gas emissions by 26% by 2030, from 2013 levels. It
also aims to lead the world in the use of hydrogen for clean
energy production.
