The presentation discusses blue ammonia as a potential source of cleaner energy produced from fossil fuels with carbon capture and storage. Blue ammonia can be used to produce blue hydrogen or as an energy source directly. Global annual production of ammonia has increased steadily since 1946 and is worth over $100 billion.

The first shipment of 40 metric tons of blue ammonia from Saudi Arabia to Japan in September 2020 paved the way for further use of hydrogen in energy systems and demonstrated Saudi Arabia's shift toward low-carbon energy sources.

Japan aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 26% by 2030 and lead the world in hydrogen use for clean energy. Saudi Arabia wants to transition away from conventional fuels and showcase sustainable energy efforts.

Presentation Title: Blue
Ammonia Plants Worldwide
What is Ammonia
 Ammonia (NH3) is a chemical compound that is made of molecules
containing three hydrogen atoms and one nitrogen atom,
and, like hydrogen, it releases no carbon dioxide when
burned in a thermal power plant.

 Blue Ammonia
 Blue ammonia is a new potential source of energy that is created from byproducts of
current fossil fuel production.
 Blue ammonia is used as feed stock to make blue hydrogen. Blue hydrogen is
hydrogen made from fossil fuels through a process that captures and store the CO2
produced rather than released it into the atmosphere.
 The use of ammonia could help in developing cleaner, affordable and more
sustainable energy.
Continued..
 In the emerging ammonia economy, blue ammonia is considered a first-
generation fuel and green ammonia is considered second-generation.
 Green ammonia production is where the process of making ammonia is
100% renewable and carbon free.
 1-Blue Ammonia Plants Worldwide:
 Saudi Arabia blue ammonia to Japan: Blue ammonia’s role in the energy
transition of Saudi Arabia and Japan. The world's first shipment of blue
ammonia was dispatched from Saudi Arabia to Japan on Sep27, 2020 for
use in a power station for the production of zero-carbon power generation,
paving the way for the further use of hydrogen in the energy system.
 The Saudi-Japanese collaboration is part of a pilot project by the Institute of
Energy Economics, Japan (IEEJ) and oil company Saudi Aramco in partnership
with Saudi Basic Industries. The first shipment contains 40 metric tons of blue
ammonia.
Background:
 In the Paris climate deal (2016), Japan has pledged to reduce its
greenhouse gas emissions by 26% by 2030, from 2013 levels. It
also aims to lead the world in the use of hydrogen for clean
energy production.

 Japan:  About 10% of power in Japan can be generated by 30

million mt of blue ammonia.

 Saudi Arabia: The project is also important for Saudi Arabia to

showcase its efforts in producing sustainable energy. The country
is making a gradual shift away from conventional sources of fuel
towards hydrogen-based, low-carbon energy sources.
2-Blue Ammonia value chain Between Siberia
and Japan:
 Toyo engineering crop.(Tokyo),Irkutsk oil company (IOC)
Russia, Japan oil, gas and metals national crop.(JOGMEC)
Agreed on a joint feasibility study related to then
development of the blue ammonia value chain between
eastern Siberia and japan. Blue ammonia is CO2-free
ammonia produced by conventional ammonia production
processes with CCS (CO2 capture and storage) to isolate
CO2 into underground reservoirs.
 The project aims to establish a future blue ammonia value
chain at a commercial scale.
Annual Production of Ammonia worldwide:
Global production rates
Ammonia production has
increased steadily since
1946, and it is estimated that
the annual
production of ammonia is
worth more than $100 billion,
with some
plants producing more than
3,000 m.t./day of NH3.
